I'm currently on day 2 of a whopping 23 days of houseguests. My husband's friend is here for 9 days, and then the day he leaves, my father-in-law and another of my husband's close friends fly in from overseas to stay for 2 weeks. I love them all, but as an introvert who requires a good deal of quiet "me" time and personal space (and in a not so spacious house with only 1.5 baths), I think I might well lose my sanity by the end of the month. I spent several years living in Russia and Central Asia (Kazakhstan). It was customary to remove your shoes when entering someone's home, and though it was foreign at first, I adjusted to it quickly (peer pressure- everyone's doing it!). However, I will say that upon return to the States, I went back to my old ways...and now? If I were asked to remove my shoes without notice, I'd think it was strange, and yes, I'd probably be annoyed. Cultural context was the key for me, and even though I see and agree with the "it's dirty" side of the debate...it's not a cultural norm in the US. That said, I DO think that clorox wipes or something like it is a great middle ground. Etiquette at Home: Solutions to The Great Shoe Debate |
