Nice job talking to your neighbor, Mariah! So many problems can be solved or prevented by just talking to each other and sometimes the easy way is to just ignore each other. I'm guilty of it on both sides!

Just last night I put up curtains on my bay window. I bought the Dignitet curtain wire with extra posts and Vivan white curtains from IKEA. I am also on the 3rd floor and have trees outside my window so privacy is not my main concern. I love the look of the windows and the light that comes in from them. The Vivan curtains let a lot of light through for not being too sheer. I think they may come in colors but I have also thought about dying them in the future if I change my mind. They are also sold in pairs and in two lengths. Last weekend they were on sale for $9.99 from $14.99 (I think) at my IKEA. If you don't have an IKEA within driving distance I just took a quick look and the Dignitet curtain wire is available on ebay and you may find cheaper shipping options there. It is great for handling the corners of the bay window without being too much of a distraction with extra hardware that curtain rods would require. I think this combo is a good solution for your budget, current apt and future possibilities.

I used both Howard's products on a 1950s sewing desk I found at Goodwill. I was amazed at how the Restor-a-Finish would conceal scratches and water damage! I felt like I was watching an infomercial with the instant results. My own sewing and crafting will add wear to the desk so I was not concerned with making it look new. It is now mainly free from scratches, has a nice rich color and shine to it, and the wax helped take away the musty smell.

I love the idea but what are some ways to make it more grown up?

Colorblindness is an X chromosome linked trait that is also recessive. Males only have one X chromosome while women have 2. If a male has genes for colorblindess, it will be effective whereas women will have the genes on the other X chromosome to mask the colorblindness. My father is colorblind and that means I have one copy of that gene. My future sons will have a 50% chance of being colorblind.

Both of my sister's sons are not colorblind but we sure did quiz them a lot when they first started learning their colors!

I like the idea of a bold mirror or piece of art. If it is bold enough to hold its own, then you don't really need to fill in the sides of the fireplace. Sconces on either side would work nicely too.

I used curtain rods that I already had in a similar way. My scarves and my hats are now on a small corner wall behind my bedroom door. I wear scarves so much, I love that they are very accessible when I am running out the door.
