We used to hide 2 silver bells each Christmas eve when we came home from church for Santa to find. The bells would be hidden anywhere from in the tree to on shelves and each year "Santa" would always find and ring the bells.

Of course the other major tradition revolves around southern food eaten on New Year's day. The meal is black eyed peas, fried hog jowl, stewed tomatoes and greens. Each of these things is to bring health and wealth in the coming year. It is a MUST in my family to have this on New Year's Day and is often the first meal we eat!

Green Chili burritos. I love making them with left overs. You can use fresh or canned green chilis which ever is easier. 1 whole onion chopped and the beef shredded. You will put in a crock pot if you can't be there to watch it or if you can be put on the stove over med. heat with beef broth and the onions and chili and some salt and pepper for taste.
allow the broth to boil down out of the beef and add another cup (keep some in reserve) as this happens. The more times you do this the more tender and flavorful the beef etc. Plan on about an hour or so if stove top. If in crock you will need to strain and put on stove to evaporate the remaining juices so they aren't so runny. So yummy!

@Rahskolnikov I am sorry but fear is not a useless emotion it is instinctual in every human. Fear is the ability to recognize danger, without fear humans would never have evolved.
Yes, I sound silly for all of my anxieties. But many others also have them.
Fear of the dark happens because as humans we don't have the ability to see in the dark and our ancestors knew that predators could.
Fear of windows at night-I would add that to the one before and add that historically once people were in for the night, they were essentially bared in with windows shuttered for protection.
Fear of Silence- people talk of the "calm before the storm" being a bad thing, you often hear stories of animals in the woods going completely silent when a predator is near by, or silence of animals right before an earthquake...It means something bad is coming
For people who are afraid of clowns...it makes sense...They are not able to see a person's humanity under the makeup. The same goes for masks...they probably don't really like those either.
Fear isn't a bad thing. It isn't stupid or useless. Sure, you can become anxious over stupid things...but there is a reason people dislike these things maybe you should ask WHY they are afraid...

Eeek! What Are You Afraid Of?

I will even admit how terrified I am of the dark and mirrors etc. I went to a friend's home recently where she rents from her parents. Her mother was sitting only a foot or so from their bathroom door at the time this occurred just so you have an idea.
I went into the bathroom (and this house is at least 100 years old) and it shares 2 doors, one with the living room and one with a bedroom. The bedroom was dark and it freaked me out so I ran over and shut that door before I could do anything else. after using the bathroom I turned off the light (which was next to the door to the bedroom NOT the livingroom) and ran over to the other door. The second door would not open. It was a little stuck but I didn't know it. I was in the dark, in an old house that I frankly get the willies in and I started to panic and I screamed for help. My friend's mom was laughing outside the door when my friend opened the door. I couldn't catch my breath I was so freaked out.

See some of my fears come from the fact that one of my sisters had a friend who used to come around and then would come in and tell us what we had been doing for the last 30 minutes or so. He thought it was funny and the dogs wouldn't bark because they knew him...Talk about making someone even more paranoid!!!
I am not sure how people live in those all glass houses!

cremedela I totally get this one! Bloody Mary memories as a kid...I either cover them up if they are in a room or work very hard not to look into them at night. I also don't like being in houses that have a tone of mirrors.
Mirrors and Windows I am not sure how people do it!

Yay! I am so glad I am not the only scaredy-cat out there! Here is goes...I am afraid of:
1. The dark- sometimes it doesn't bother me as I really do like star gazing etc. but it kind of goes with...
2. Silence- i grew up in a house with 5 other people. There is always noise somewhere. But when it is quiet and dark...I...FREAK...OUT! (that's usually when things jump out after people in the paranormal activities movies too!)
3. Aliens- Crazy I know. But my dad would always joke about them and the 90's they were always on tv. One should not allow a kid to see "Fire in the Sky" EVER. To this day I am unable to sleep in a room if the blinds or curtains to a window show any of the outside and my parents house always had all the blinds at an angle stuck in the crack of the window so I didn't have to see dark from my bed. Not that it would stop an alien coming through a wall, but it would stop me from seeing them first!
4. Ghost- No explanations needed!
5. Gypsies- Funny story here. Favorite saying in my area of the south. "Behave or I will sell you to the Gypsies!" I misbehaved a lot...First time I met a gypsy in Spain it didn't go well. I couldn't really understand her, but I am pretty sure she put a curse on me. (Note if you travel to Spain and a touristy place, don't let someone grab your hand because they may curse you if you don't give them money)
The list could go on...heights, snakes...freaky children that pop up when you least expect them...HA! but I am not sure there is room or time! :) Happy Halloween!

Huh...I have never thought of this as cobblestone. To me this looks like a bricked street or if it didn't have color then setts (Belgian blocks).
Where I grew up and the only places I have been that had cobbled streets used the small round stones that were truly a pain to walk on. While the bricked streets were only problematic if you had some rise or fall in the stones and you caught a toe or something.

How many women took color test #2 and were told that they need outside validation in order to feel whole or something like those terms? I took it twice with totally different patterns just because i thought the first one was very dead on in many ways, but then noticed that the words are slightly different but the message is generally the same...

While these are neat and all, I can't help but to think that it would be a lot better to put rain barrels on each of these downspouts instead of artwork. Given the fact that most of the U.S. is currently in the worst drought since the 1950's it would be really great to advocate capturing that rain water instead of losing it.

Can I share that I have also seen on some design sites that people advocate dying their extension cords with Rite Dye products to color match them to their interiors? i can't tell you how stupid this sounds. Submerging extension cords in water and using them afterwards is dangerous, then you add in the fact that you are actively allowing something to impact the covering of the cord.
Don't use indoor cords for outdoor use, only use outdoor/ weather rated cords outdoors and use them properly and for goodness sakes, if you have one that has been submerged in water...just buy a new one. It isn't worth the risk.

So what they did was tear down an old shed that was on their property and build a studio office in its place. This is a great job for the amount that they spent but it is not a before and after remodel, nor is the building that they built a "shed." The thing could function as a guest house for all intents and purposes except it doesn't have a bathroom.
What kind of permits does one have to get to remove an old shed and replace it with an office with air conditioning, fridge etc?

for a house tour just click the link to the magazine provided and there is a full 40 picture tour provided.
As Aceyx mentions, pages 36-38 have very cute donkeys.
I do have a question about the rope railings on the second floor now that I see them. They are not connected at the top of the stairs on page 35. Wouldn't that be a building code violation or some sort of hazard with small children?

@ValHalla given some of the apartments and house tours I have seen on this site, I doubt a lot of what is on this site is for the "average" person.
@Bredlo too funny!
@Carollann, as someone whose community has been through such an ordeal, I understand the concern. However, one has to recognize the difference between a gardening magazine with a kitschy name and something with more radical intent.

This is a lovely home in a style that I for one am happy to see being copied. another style is the low country dogtrot that is coming back.
Garden and Gun is a great magazine about all things southern from architecture to food and gardens to hunting. Despite the name it is a very well done magazine that has content well worth reading here on AT.

There was another article on AT similar to this not to long ago. It mentioned that 20 years ago many of these "trends" would have a much longer life in design because people's circles weren't as large as they are now.
Today with social networking, the internet and 600 TV channels to choose from with 300 being DIY type networks, it isn't crazy to think that all those "new, neat, different" ideas are getting worn out sooner. When you see 500 pictures of something you thought you had that was unique and different...well it kind of takes away from what you did. Everyone wants to have something in their life a little special, but once they share it, it is copied and then...well it is time to change in about 5 months.

Funny I never even thought of these tables as ways to hide things from sight, but rather as a way to turn your living room table into a desk if you didn't have an office. It is perfect for sitting on the sofa or a chair and having your laptop while working from home.
Of course I am the type of person who loses things if I "put them away" so maybe that is why.

I will freely admit I defer to my father who is well versed in construction, however is anyone else concerned about the top bunk?
It may just be angles but it only looks like he has 4 supports for the top bunk using 2x4's but they don't all come forward. I guess with it being secured to the wall in the studs you don't need to worry about any tipping or tilting but it just seems odd to have the supports not evenly spaced.
Could someone with some knowledge clarify?
