Totally bummer I know, but if your place was built before 1978, did you test for lead paint? If you're going to be scraping and sanding, it's really important to do that. Let's just say that the VOC in paint is a heck of a lot less threatening than a good case of lead poisoning. How To Paint a Windowsill & Window Trim Apartment Therapy Tutorials |

As many comments have noted, this idea is popular in Europe. The soaking wet bathroom thing is the fatal flaw to me. Once someone takes a shower, the bathroom is essentially useless for the next couple of hours unless you want to get your clothes wet and slide off the toilet seat (yes, even with the lid down, the steam makes it slick). See that thing sticking out in the middle of the fixture? It unscrews and you can replace it with a longer piece and attach a disk shade below the lightbulbs. It's not particularly interesting (although you could probably paint or otherwise decorate the disk), but it works. Ideas for Covering Old Bare-Bulb Fixtures? Good Questions |

After replacing the window coverings and hardware in the kitchen, I would concentrate on the bathroom. Take down the cabinet over the toilet and replace it with some open shelving and repaint the vanity perhaps a deep espresso color (okay, so chocolate and pink is one of my favorite color combinations). Somewhere down the line, you can have the kitchen cabinets refaced and a new countertop put it. For right now, it isn't too bad, although I might change the faucet. This was several years ago, but I found a great apartment in Oak Square from, get this, the newspaper. The apartment building was owned by an old fellow, who used the old school way of advertising. Well carpeting may be there to stay, but it doesn't have to be that color. I bought a house came with that monstrosity. One thing I will point out is that it shows everything. It gets noticeably dusty too. It is the bane of my existence. We've ripped it up everywhere but on the stairs, because we're saving up to get them recarpeted.
