That ceiling light is ridiculous - why does that light show up in every kind of apartment! You should get something that will hang below the duct. It would probably help create a separate space. Maybe you could make it a little nook - for reading, office, whatever.

Agree on removing the valance at the window. Also, you might consider painting the walls and cabinet the same color or similar colors so that you don't focus on the details of the cabinets and the boundaries between the cabinet and wall so much.

Asbestos pipe wrap usually has a distinctive honeycomb profile, sort of like corrugated cardboard. You would usually find it on radiator pipes or something that needs insulating. That looks like a big pipe, not like a hot water supply.

Look at Crossville Savoy subway tile - it comes in white, off white and a beige. I wonder if the beige would coordinate with your floor. Maybe you could do the field of the wall in white tile and add a beige cap or liner to tie it back to the floor. Maybe a sand color for the grout rather than a dark gray.

There are some online sites where you can buy custom cut foam and the price varies depending on quality. Also, Joann's Fabric sells foam, though I'm not sure if they have single pieces large enough. Do you have a sewing machine?
My sewing skills are pretty limited but I made square cushions for a chair. I found that adding piping camoflauges my bad sewing! I just traced the old cushions, mine had rounded corners and I think it would have gone better if I had squared them off. I also used a non-geometric pattern so you can't tell if it's crooked. And velcro to make an envelope closure instead of a zipper. Good Luck!

Can I Reupholster a Daybed Myself? Good Questions

I owned the case study daybed for a short time about 9 years ago. The frame broke when 3 people sat on it, it may have been a fluke, maybe they were sitting in the wrong place, maybe there was something wrong with it, don't know. DWR took it back and refunded our money. Even though I loved it and still love it, I didn't replace it...just made me too nervous.
