Has anyone had any luck with grow bags? We've tried several plants in ours and had no luck with everything dying after one of two hot days... Here's the kind of thing I mean (not my website) http://lifeonthebalcony.com/3-great-ways-to-increase-the-amount-of-vegetables-you-can-grow-on-a-balcony/

We run a small not for profit, Green Renters and find the biggest challenges for people are a)lack of long term leases b)dodgy DIY and repairs done by their landlord. Then I made this in celebration of us renters http://greenrenters.org/product/rental-sweet-rental-print

Glad it's not just me who has these problems! We're a small not for profit and even with workshops it's impossible to get people to commit. People will always complain 'oh why don't you run workshops in [insert location] and we often have to say, we did but no one turned up.

if people don't rsvp we have to cancel and we don't get paid and have often turned away work to keep the date free. Frustrating. We often recommend organisations who book us to charge people a fee before hand to ensure commitment...

I try not to stay with people if I can avoid it because I snore. Loudly. I've been to sleep clinic etc and there's not much that can be done. If I do have to stay with people, I bring earplugs for them.

Reusable bags have been the norm in Australia for a long time but supermarkets, shops etc tend to sell 'green bags' for $1 made of polypropylene ( a fossil fuel-based plastic). The bags are imported from China which doesn't help and people tend to just buy lots more (most admit to having so many green bags they throw them out) rather than remember to take the same ones.

Calico bags are a good alternative but they are imported from India and not usually made fair trade. I made 6 bags a few years ago which I've been reusing as much as I can.

Big fan of batch cooking here in particular:
-brown rice
-pasta sauce
-dhal
-eggplant curry
-vegetarian chilli
-turkey patties
-veg soup

I cook them in advance (often over a weekend) then store in containers or ziplock bags (which I wash and reuse). Saves a lot of time and the temptation of ordering delivery pizza!

My big bug bears:
-Don't cancel less than half a day before an event unless there's an emergency
-Don't RSVP and then not turn up (it's not a facebook invite!)

Almost every time I provide catering for people with special requirements (gf scones made by hand, vegan roast instead of meat when no one else is vegan etc) they are the person who fails to show up.

We have housesitters quite a bit as we travel for work. Please, f we've dashed to meet a plane or something at 4am and left a few dishes in the sink, don't leave them and just wash your own for the three weeks we're away. Yes, this has happened. Same with food that has obviously gone off in the fridge!

This is helpful, i too work from a home office and it is really easy to get swept up by the acting and reacting tasks in a day and hence feel overwhelmed and end up wasting time. Definitely going to work with this.

In Australia we have (up until very recently) had several years of drought. Watering gardens is done with grey water (for non-edibles) and excess cooking water where possible for edibles. Most people don't have hoses and trigger nozzles were in line with the water restriction to avoid wastage. We flush our toilet with grey water (bucket in the shower/from washing machine) to save clean water for the garden.

Can I also add, that the garden in the pic would really benefit from some mulch-peastraw, sugar cane mulch etc. Mulching helps avoid water evaporation from the soil.
cheers

Good ideas in theory but our landlord is certainly not going to let us drill holes in the walls for hooks or shelves-stick on ones would be too light for coats.
