I agree with patrick (the other one). I would paint it the same color as the walls.

By painting it the same color as the walls it will not draw attention to itself as painted panelling, and it will open up the room (especially if you go with cream).

As a short person, stools are a way of life (especially in the kitchen).

Unfortunately to clean those difficult to reach places, stools don't quite cut it, but counters help (in the kitchen, at least).

I love Halloween, but super early marketing ruins it by making it dull.

I also love Fall, but I don't like it encroaching on summer.

You could do built in shelving (stack plates, books, french pots, whatever), or cabinets, you could paint the inside another color, have fun with it. I would place some art or a mirror above the mantle.

If you drink, you could do a wine rack with shelves/cabinets.

The vanity appears to be awkwardly placed there, I'd go for the tub.

Eric,

I would love to see the lilac color with the red and green. Anyway you could upload a pic to flickr?

Hmmm. It is hard to tell without knowing what furniture you have (as you have yet to move into the space). I would suggest bookshelves, as well or a bookcase. If you have a TV in that room, you could always place it in that spot.

If you go with built-ins (or bookcase, shelving, etc), you could place a chair stort of in front of it, but slightly to the side with a little side table on the other side of the chair with a lamp. Closer to the window than the one that is there now. Choose a chair that is not part of a pair. Then arrange your main seating area separately.

Take out an ad in your local newspaper? While I do not think that is the most likely route to take (there are some good suggestions above), I was thinking that my grandparents had/have a lot of Mid C Mod stuff and they don't do craigslist, but do read the classifieds. Perhaps you might get lucky there.

Moore-
What are your client's interests? I can help you with titles or point you in the right direction. Many people have suggested places to get the books, and I second those. You can always buy hardcovers and take off the jacket.

Maxwell,
Your post is well written. I appreciate your dedication to this community, and as a long time reader (but newer poster), thank you for setting the tone. I think AT is one of the best maintained blogs out there.

Also, I feel guilty for my recent Barbie Camper comment.

I punch of color is a good thing, but this looks like it belongs in Barbie's Camper. It also reminds me of those plastic training toilets for tots.

Not hot.

Sweet Corn with a Juicy Tomato with just a hint of pepper on it is summer for me. Throw in a bushel of crabs with old bay seasoning, and I am in heaven.

If it were me, I would paint the inside back (not the shelves, trim, etc) a color. Put books in the shelves, and then add some of your treasures.
