I just gave up a mindspring.com email that I had since 1999. I would have kept it, but Earthlink, who bought that domain, kept raising the price to keep just the email (I quit using them as my ISP several years ago). I used to move a lot, so keeping that email was important to me. But now that people can find me via Facebook, I feel less worried about changing my email. 16 addresses. I would consider 6 of them homes, in that they have warm feelings and a sense of nostalgia attached to them. And except for my first (family home) and most recent (with spouse), the other 4 were places that I lived by myself. Anyplace I ever lived with a roommate just didn't feel like "home". Question about the riser pipe... if it's like the rise pipe in my bathroom, it gets very hot. I'm wondering how the rope is attached to the pipe? Seems like any glue would melt or make a big mess. Before & After: Nautical Themed Bathroom Makeover A Cup of Jo |

The Novogratzes did a whole episode of their show on their colonial-ish house in Great Barrington. Here's their take on going bold. Scroll to the end for a picture of the whole house. It's not my style, but it might provide some inspiration, especially for dealing with porch columns using outdoor drapery. Ideas To Perk Up a Stuffy Colonial Exterior? Good Questions |

East Nashville has really embraced the urban homestead movement. While some neighborhoods. are fairly gentrified, there are plenty is plenty of cool, cute, affordable housing available. We just bought a 970 sq ft brick cottage with a quarter acre lot for $87,000. It's a somewhat walkable, very bike friendly, and there are amazing shops and restaurants. We have a small collection of Metlox California Contempora (there are similar patterns called Freeform and Mobile in different colorways). My partner had acquired 6 berry bowls in the early 90's at a stoop sale. Last year, we bought four plate and four cups and saucers on the cheap. (the cups, along with some accessory pieces are solid black matte glaze). They are fun to use, and I hope we run across more pieces, although with a pattern like that, a little goes a long way. Also, I have neither the space, money or inclination to be a "completeist". Spotlight on Collectibles: Metlox Handcrafted Dishware |

After an ongoing clothes moth issue, we dumped all of our wool rugs for synthetics. We love them! We have some of the sisal looking ones, and some traditional looking tufted ones, and a couple of "rag" looking ones. All of them feel pretty good... not at all plasticky. And they are a cinch to clean. Spill and accidents that would have caused a crisis with our old rugs are no problem now. I got most of our rugs from Overstock. We've had lots of positive comments, especially on this one we put in our guest room. Can I Really Use an Outdoor Carpet Indoors? Good Questions |

We are considering a move from our car- free Manhattan life to Nashville next year, and I am gnashing my teeth over this very issue. Even though I am from the south, after living in NYC for 10 years, I am committed to having some walkability. Apartment Must Haves: Within Walking Distance Reader Survey |

The trick for my 70+ year old white porcelain tub and sinks has been the magic eraser. They were very dingy, stained and paint splattered. After taking a razor to the paint, and using lots of the above mentioned techinques, I still wasn't happy with the results. But using a magic eraser every week as part of my usual cleaning routine has slowly taken out the deep stains, and has given the surface a lovely luster. Perhaps it's damaging the porcelain, but when I leave this apt, it will be gutted and these fixtures will end up in a trash heap, so I'm not overly concerned. They look much better! I replaced all of my wool rugs with polypropolene after repeatedly battling a clothes moth problem (the wool rugs provided a tasty meal and safe harbor). And to tell you the truth, I much prefer my synthetic rugs. We just have cats, but there's just so much less worry about spills and dirt. And we get lots of compliments about our rugs. I don't think I'll go back to wool. Suggestions For Weatherproofing Wool Rug? Good Question |

I see Doug in the Flower District sometimes. I still remember the master bedroom that he "redesigned" into the interior of a train sleeper car, and I think he painted a woman's Chippendale style dresser white. It was awful. Trading Spaces: Where Are They Now? |

Actually, I just moved into a newly renovated apartment that had one of those vents in the kitchen. A friend lived in the apartment before me, and I knew that you could hear everything that was happening in the neighbors bathroom (yes, everything!) through this vent. So during the renovations I asked the landlord about it. Since there was a window in the kitchen, the vent could be covered up. They covered it with a square of drywall, patched and painted. I need recommendations or advice about mounting two of Ikea's Varde Glass Cabinets to plaster walls. I have no cabinets in my kitchen, and these are a great solution. But they come with no mounting hardware, and I'm not sure this is a project that I could do myself. I am looking for someone who can do this at a price that won't cost twice as much as the cabinets themselves (less than $500), or step-by-step fool proof instructions on how to do it myself so that they and my dished don't come crashing down in a disastrous mess.
