I second light fixtures at Overstock.com. I've had really good luck hunting out good deals on fixtures that look A LOT more expensive.
I removed LAYERS of wallpaper in my bathroom by renting a steamer. After a good wash, prime and paint, the walls look great and I didnt' have to redrywall.
My husband layed our tile floor as a weekend DIY with a little help from how to books. It looks great and google helped us install the new toilet ourselves.
I splurged on a custom ONE DOOR cabinet so I could have a symmetrical vanity with storage drawers on both sides in our too small bathroom.

I'm glad these have become more popular. When I bought my house I had to buy a small blanket rack to hang towels on because I couldn't find one ANYWHERE. The bathroom has a full size window instead of wall space for a towel bar. I consider that a reasonable trade!

That Viking range is as big as my bathroom! It is amazing to look at and dream but I'd have to give up my sink to have one in my kitchen.

I don't cook much either and I keep looking for that POP of color that the gray is a backdrop for but most of these kitchens don't have any. I think that gray would be lovely with a bright green or bright pink but by themselves they just look like pictures taken in poor lighting.

Of all of the compromises you have to make when buying a house, this is one I could live with. I would never have picked the granite or an immovable table but you make it work. We had to tear out a wall to accommodate a family of 5 in our house so we'd have happily inherited a space that actually worked. I would miss table linens though...if only for occasional meals.

My bathroom is pretty standard but the layout isn't big enough for anything but the sink, toilet and tub. I do LOVE having a full size window but after adding a hamper I've FILLED it up!. I love the pictures of small furniture in the bathroom. I think the cabinets used for linens are the best use.

Why not hang inside mount shades and then hang your beautiful curtains over them as a layered look? You would have the shade for privacy when you sweep the curtain to the side to run the air. You could get shades that let in a lot of light (NOT thermal) and then retain the benefit of having large beautiful windows.

I agree with PI wholeheartedly! I used to live in a great 1940's apartment and the toilet required about 7 minutes between flushes! It would not be good for guests to not realize this and it allowed us to plan our bathroom time so everyone had some bathroom privacy.
In my current house, the door on our spare room didn't close well and my brother-in-law stayed with us for about a month between houses. I warned him before he moved his things in and we made sure that it closed well enough to STAY closed even though it didn't latch.

I gave up a second bathroom and half of a garage. I really wanted to live in a certain area of town and near but not on the freeway. Everything else in my price range was scary so we bought the 1080 sq foot 3/1, 1 car garage and we still live here THREE CHILDREN later. I wonder if it was a good idea sometimes but I sleep well living exactly where I wanted to live and my children go to a great school.
Living in close quarters really just makes us a close family. Although, I'll get back to you about how I feel when I have teenagers in my small house!

I really enjoy that this house feels like someone lives in it. Sometimes the tours are so styled that I would be nervous sitting on the furniture. This house feels like somewhere you'd be welcomed in and handed a cup of coffee :)

Designlover, Esq., check out Craigslist! There are always tons of mirrors who have been orphaned from their dresser bases. Many have great frames already on them and often need just a coat of paint.

I was thinking this is the perfect bunk bed solution too. Our rule is that you climb up without things in your hand so we don't worry about slipping since the bed is metal. It would be great for getting toys up!

For me it was a lovely honey colored dresser at the antique store. I had measurements I wanted to fit so all of my clothing would be well stored. It was just a little bit too small. I haven't been able to find one that fits my measurements and I'm so disappointed that I'll have to settle for too small and it isn't that lovely honey colored dresser. The price tag was prefect too!

I was pleasantly surprised! It is a really lovely after! I love the addition of not just color but TEXTURE to this space.

I think my husband I both just let the other have something if the LOVE it. You work into what you are doing and the end space looks like a piece of the both of you. I imagine with roommates you feel less sentimental about your space reflecting both of you but for us it works.

Thank you for sharing! I love that the space is so usable and everything is at hand. I also appreciate that it doesn't look too "homey" since it is absolutely a WORKING space! That wall of bookshelves by the desk area is really wonderful!
