I paint over other's paintings all the time. I buy them at op shops (thrift stores) because I like large canvas and it is cheaper, plus the type of painting a do (lots of collage/mixed media) means that the bg coming through or the textures created add to my painting. I had an ex who worked at a uni and each semester students would leave their art there that they didn't want, so he'd load them up and give them to me to paint over.

I like the idea of painting over someone else's art - like how sometimes famous painters paintings have other famous painters paintings underneath when they are being restored!!

I think its cool, like in an old house that has been repainted over and over, to think of the story underneath.

wow, people thought I was crazy when I had a house show/party at my unit a few weeks ago, but that place is tiny! Such awesome decorations though, and that vinyl collection is amazing.

I'm addicted to op shopping and so are my parents, sometimes we find thing for each other, most of my furniture in my house isnt new. I also like hard rubbish night, so much good FREE stuff (but you have to be sneaky cause it's kinda illegal).

There is also a tip near my work, and I've found so much cool stuff there over the years, my friend also used to find bikes there and resell them for heaps more on ebay.

Last week I got an awesome little red stool for $8 and the week before I got a polaroid camera for $4 that I later found out sells for about $90 on ebay (yeah, even with the film being discontinued).

One problem I get is op shop find jealousy. My sister found the most amazing magazine rack for $3 and I've tried buying it from her but it's no use. A friend of mine also found In Utero by nirvana on vinyl for 50c, in near mint condition.

I loved op shops most in highschool and tafe, cause I couldnt afford clothes anywhere else. I used to wear argyle sweaters, men's 70s dress pants and old ski jackets, pretty weird stuff, but it fit with the punk/hippie/poorness thing.

Only if we are already discussing it. For example, some friends were trying to work out which colour to paint their living room and I made suggestions a bit different to what they were planning. They ended up liking my suggestions!

I think there's a time and place, people give me a lot of advice at the moment, but it's cause my place is new and saying something like "I hate my kitchen cupboards" usually opens up the discussion. If someone walked in and said "oh, move you couches here!" (and it wasnt my mum) I'd find it a bit rude.

Most of my friends/colleague are in the same situation with buying new houses, so it means there's a lot of discussion.

Definitely, I actually have to clean my bedroom because it's been neglected and there are clothes and blankets everywhere! I just got new blinds and the freshness of them doesnt match the messiness. Plus, my sister has been on holidays and had rearranged and cleaned up the living area of my unit so it makes me want to clean up the rest of the house. Last week when I came home and saw the house had been cleaned up, I was inspired to neaten up our garage, I put down old carpet and set up a bit of a "band area", I dont want to fill the living area with amps and guitars now it's so neat.

A few things happened over the last few weeks (electrician fixed up my bizarre outlets, my venetians arrived after THREE MONTHS of waiting) that make the house feel much better, so I have incentive to keep it clean and happy... and not looking half finished.

when I bought my house, the carpet was horrible, and I had most of it replaced. i toyed with the option of polished concrete, but my parents said it would be too cold. I'd still like to pull up the carpet in the living area and polish the concrete, I'm scared though cause apparently one lot of renters used to fix car parts in the living room, and the concrete is stained! If I do it it will be expensive, so its a one day maybe kind of thing. Plus, while I'd love wood/concrete floors one day, this is my first home so I have to pick "safe" options. As far as carpets go, I think mine is nice, it's charcoal in the living area and a sandy colour in the bedrooms. Sure its not as trendy, but in a house with an arch (ugh!!) and a brown seventies kitchen, its really the least of my problems.

Oh, and I hate fake hardwood floors, it's so obvious!

Awesome! This is one of the coolest houses I've seen on this site. I really like this kind of style. There is a good book that came out last year called "punk house" most of the houses are a lot messier that this, though!

I love houses that look lived in, my dream is to get my place looking like you can just walk in, grab a beer and crash on the couch for some good music and conversation.

I have 2 wide screen 17" screens at work, I love it for having mail open in one and work or a browser in the other. Using spaces and expose as well means I have endless screen space.

Just the one old mac crt display at home. Or the laptop. I would like to get a similar setup at home to what I have at work eventually, but it's low priority for the moment.

According to half the readers of this site I should not accommodate friends with unhealthy habits. i am no longer going to open my door wider for fat people, let people who drive (I don't) park in my driveway, and people who dont recycle will have to take their trash home with them! Also no one is allowed to bring smelly food to my house or wear perfume or hairspray I dont like the smell of.

Some of you are so self righteous and rude. Anything to feel better than someone else I guess...

I think smoking inside is gross (the smell doesnt go away, it stains your walls etc) but If the person smoking stays outside and doesnt chuck their butt in my garden that's fine with me.

What about we make people go outside to talk on the phone from now on? It supposedly causes cancer and I find it much more annoying than smoking.

Does anyone know of somewhere good in Australia to get cheap/good string curtains? I was going to put beaded curtains up in my archway between my kitchen and living area, but sting curtains would be a lighter/fresher look I think.

i wanna get some of the smaller expedits (two blocks across, instead of four) and put them either side of my tv, I have a mac plus, an se and a colour classic so maybe I'll put them on top, but then I dont get to use them!

one of my favourite bars in Melbourne (st jeromes) has milk crates to sit on, they also had milk crates with square cushions as seating at a music festival they did, and I've seen the same idea a few other places. I like it, I want to steal a bunch and have them as outdoor seating with asian/indian style silk cushion that are really cheap at markets. Seems perfect for a summer get together, cause they dont take up much space and are easy to move. When I'm not using them I can chuck them in the garage and the cushions inside one, easy!

I like the "punk rock"-ness of milk crates as furniture, I cant afford super expensive furniture yet, especially for outside, so it seems like a colourful, sturdy compromise.

I dont know about adding legs to them though, that's kinda tacky.

Why wreck a dead kennedys record? Someone would have bought it on ebay! Then you could use the profit to buy a bowl ;)
