How do you avoid weeds? My native garden requires CONSTANT maintenance. The weeds are winning. :-(

Landscaping Newbie: Where Do I Start?

I bought a duplex scanner a while back, and went through scanning every item. Problem was that sometimes the scanner would save the files to unexpected places, or scan simplex (somehow the settings got tweaked) or two pieces of paper got picked up at once. Be careful when you scan your docs because once you throw away the scanned papers, you might find that you don't have what you think you did.

Sincerely,
Girl with important missing documents

At my local Anthropologie store, they had collections of plates displayed on a wall like above, except there were all mushed together into some sort of plate collage, with them overlapping each other.

There is a Indonesian restaurant in LA I frequent that uses OSB/particleboard in small amounts, and I think it looks very nice. This is just way too much. Also think it looks sloppy to wallpaper right over windows since it was the same as what's on the walls. Maybe if it was a different pattern or contrasting color it would look nice, but it looks kind of like an accident to me. I do like the wallpaper pattern though. And I think chalkboards are so cliche right now (sorry!). I think the black ceiling works.

I did this in 2008 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/zonagirl/2334084092/), and it worked great for my apartment's weird plaster lathe walls - it was hard to find hte studs, and they were weirdly spaced. However, it does use up some space behind the headboard, and the metal Stolmen posts give it an industrial feel, though I think IKEA has white Stolment posts now...

Please don't change anything original that is in good condition or can be revived. It will save you money, and you will have something unique instead of all those cheapo Made in China kitchen makeovers from Home Depot. I think adding some color - like yellow, orange or light turquoise - would look great with the white cabinetry and gray countertops.

If it's a vacant lot, then there probably was already a building there that has been torn down, or at least the area was grazed previously in the past for development. The natural environment shouldn't be just weeds, but a diverse mix of grasses and trees, etc, as well as animal life. If you ask me, I think this spot has already been compromised. You will only improve it by adding a garden. Good luck!

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but I tried the Tile Grout Coating, and it got dirty again very quickly. When it dried, the grout coating has a plastic or rubbery consistency, and dirt sticks to it. Then you can't effectively clean it without removing it.

I have had better luck just chipping out grout and refilling it in.

Stay away from All American Movers located in Tarzana. I actually just hire day laborers nowadays.

I use a bath mat to move drag stuff very easily around the hardwood floors in my apartment. Just flip the bath mat upside down, with the rubber part on top, and it kind of 'sticks' to the bottom of the furniture you are moving, while the other side of the mat has smooth fabric, and glides gently along the floor. Works perfectly more me every time.

Lucky people!

As far as I know, any dog over 20 lbs can't fly in the cabin on a plane. My dog weighs 32 lbs. I have sent her via cargo ONCE. That was not only expensive, but also too traumatizing for her.

Too bad too, because I think she would behave very well on a plane.

I used to let my dog sleep in bed with me, but it was contributing to her separation anxiety, so I stopped. Plus I got hair in my mouth once which was a result of all her snuggling on the bed.

I used to have a doggie door when my dog was a puppy. One day she went poop in the backyard, and not noticing, stepped on it immediately afterwards. Being the happy, frisky spaniel she was, she came back into the house and ran all around the place, jumping on my couch, my roommate's bed, my bed - smearing her pooh-coated paws all over everything.

Yeah, not a big fan of dogs on the bed. Their domain is the floor! ;-)

Absolut Vodka did the same thing for a Sex and the City episode. I hate it when that happens. Seems so violating. And it messes with the integrity of the show.

I second what Jennifer G. said about the IKEA plastic plates. Plus a lot of their picnicware is made in the USA, so that makes 'em even better for the environment!

My dog doesn't have accidents - or at least unplanned and messy ones - since she uses pee pads. But I would love to find a more environmentally friendly option for that. I tried my neighbor's old newspaper, but I'm wondering if I can get her to pee on a cloth alternative that I can wash vs. throw away...or...something...

Awww. Antique stoves. Adorable, but not very energy efficient. I don't understand why a company doesn't get into the market of making retro-style 'new' appliances.

I think the Valley is the cheapest, but depends on where. Near Ventura Blvd, not really. But I have some friends who got a 2-bedroom, 1-bath, all remodelled w/a big landscaped yard near Havenhurst & Victory for $2100 a month. They can walk to the Orange Line busway, and Balboa park. It's an older home w/ lotsa charm. I'm jealous.

I rent a 1940's-era-built condo near Ventura Blvd and Sepulveda for $1k and it includes a private garage. But the owners there are snootty, and the HOA actually says no sunbathing on the lawn! Still...I've been there 4 years, and now rents on my street are $1400 for the same thing.

Oh yeah, $400 in 4 years, $100 a year??! I have no real rent control - only the appreciation and compassion of my landlords - but I say vote no on 98 too!
