No. We must also remember that not everyone shares the same aspirations. I recall several arguments with a friend who is a much more ambitious cook than I am. I am happy to make a good meal with wholesome ingredients. But I rarely par boil, pre sautee, or do anything that will leave me in the kitchen for longer than 20 minutes. Even if it brought my meals to higher culinary levels. Yes, I still love you dear friend, but no, I will not brine, marinade, and debone the chicken. Ever. I would be wary of setting goals that are too high. Like churning your own butter and making your on pasta sauce, the intentions are good, but the amount of blood, sweat and tears will have you running back to that box of Hamburger Helper. Also, a good, natural pasta sauce or jam will have the same ingredients you can use at home, as canning is a great way to conserve fresh ingredients. A mix. America is being ruined by suburban sprawl, but you will find many beautiful small cities in Europe where the homes and stores are centered around a downtown area, but the true unspoiled country is only a few miles away. One day I will live in a beautiful German town of this kind... one day... Urban vs Rural: What's in Your Blood? |

I have mixed feelings about professional organizers. On one hand, it is a symptom of our over consuming society that there is a need for them at all. I don't even know if they exist outside the US. On the other hand, a lot of people have serious issues hoarding and accumulation too much stuff. My husband's family is that way, grandparents, parents, children, they all accumulate things most of us would throw away. Their homes are full of clutter and it clearly affects their life. But even if they asked for help, it would be hard for someone in the family to go through each room and tell them that 95% of its contents are garbage, old, useless, broken, ugly, or redundant. An outsider trained to do this would do a much better job. And they may help get to the root of the problem, and avoid further accumulation and purchase of useless objects, saving money in the long run. Bring in an Expert: Professional Organizers |

Can't wait to go get some flowers. I am sticking with the whole "prescription" even when it doesn't fully apply. I have a lady who cleans once a week, but even if not absolutely necessary cleaning the floors will help me get in touch with the house, and have that great feeling of accomplishment once I am done. This home has the exact spirit of old/airy/comfy I often see on old Country Living books from the UK where the homes are ages old, each object has a story, and the spaces are full of stories and memories to be made. Beauty as a result of living. The kitchen island with the weathered cutting board and cut herbs screams French country living... I swoon. Chay's Lake Hollywood Spanish Hideaway House Tour |

I find it very telling that a whole generation (mine) of women have grown up to worship the closet as a room where a girl goes to be in the company of her precious bags and shoes. I find it spiritually emptying. Yes, clothes are fun. But they are meant to be worn, during life. That thing that happens when we are not sitting in a zebra print ottoman admiring the latest Jimmy Choo acquisition. Makes me think of Scrooge spending all his time with his gold coins. Not to mention what it says about our society as a whole that closets are so big entire rooms are devoted to them. Sai's Glam Girl Pad House Tour |

I don't have a smartphone. I get whatever cell phone is too old for my PARENTS when they get an upgrade. My last one was a 2006 Razr. My dog just chewed it up and I've been without one for a week. In fact, I'll usually keep it uncharged, or forget it somewhere anyway. Getting By Without A Smartphone Between Upgrades |

Ask around. There are contractors who do this for bigger companies who would do the job well at a fraction of the cost if you work directly with them (and pay cash). We had our almost 1000 sq rental done for $700. Our landlord is a contractor, so he recommended an employee from a company he uses who is a good worker. SO worth it! Agreed on the Ikea. Personally I doubt I could tell the difference, except for the legs (you can easily tweak those). Ikea stuff lasts a long time. Ok. I love the house. I love the couple, they are just all sorts of cool and adorable in that " I want to BE them" way. That didn't sound creepy in my head. I love the flag. Who cares if it is displayed correctly, incorrectly, upside down. These "codes" are a legacy of a time long, long gone by when silly superstitions and empty rituals dictated everyday life. What if I paint a Porky pig on a flag, what effect does it have on this country, its peoples' patriotism, its freedoms, its political standing, or relationship with other nations? NONE. Also their flag in the living room is offensive, but a gaudy Old Navy flag t-shirt with rhinestones is ok? Sean & Sara's Minimal Americana House Tour |

I am currently unemployed, and working as a "personal assistant" until I find a job. That is my boss' description of the job, but I am more like a "house assistant". I plan the meals for the week, make sure the pantry is stocked with the ingredients necessary for those meals, shop for those missing, point to areas of the home the housekeeper should work on, and even the odd handywoman project here and there... But a lot of the added on tasks came from my relationship with the family and time. Is There Such Thing as a Premium Housekeeper? Good Questions |
