On the subject of old Smokey... anybody else get the giggles whenever the hear a NYC taxi printing out a receipt as that is the same sound old cinderhead makes when he is on a rampage... I noticed it a while back and was annoyed that it took me that long to realize it was the same sound & now whenever i hear it, it cracks me up!

I have modeled nude for several artists & photographers & have some the images - line drawings, ink sketches & photos on my walls. All of my friends accept this and expect it. Hell - half the time the art on the walls isn't the only thing nude - but i digress.
It's your house, your walls, your art! If others don't like it they are free to stay away. If they have opinions that they must share, they can do so courteously and respectfully, and expect a response in a similar tone.

Thanks all,

I just ordered one this morning. I knew i could count on you guys to know where i could get this!

For the record, I did search locally for this, first. Tried most of the places mentioned. None of them had it in the right size :-( or they were way out of my price range!

Keep up the great work all!

Colin

I like the sliding closet doors with rice paper idea - you can fairly inexpensive tracks from Ikea that will carry lightweight doors.
That said I can see a toddler lunging at them and hands going thru the rice paper a bit too easily.
Might i suggest you do clear plexi BACKED with the rice paper or sari or other fabric. In that way they will wipe clean but still look good, and you can do the lighting trick suggested above. A frame made of lightweight wood & reinforced by the plexi sheets would be plenty strong, while still lightweight enough to slide...

It's posts like this that make me love AT all the more...

That said i have 2 large boxes under the bed & 3 bins in the basement of stashed stuff that I will go thru 'once the friends have left' .... Plus if my roommates knew the amount of stuff i hide in their room when they are out of town & I have friends over it would get ugly....

side note; bathtubs & ovens make great emergency stash spots - just be sure to remove whatever you have stashed there BEFORE you attempt to use the space for its intended purpose.

I am SOOO loving this thread!!!

Things i identify with/confess to so far:
1: scheduling parties to force myself to clean up - am having 1 tomorrow night so this evening will be my cleaning frenzy.
2: stacking clothes waiting to into the closet on the bed - both sweaters and clean laundry etc (when its warm laundry it feels like i have company )
3: leaving laundry sitting for days until completing it - The washer & dryer are in the basement so i will often leave loads in either or both when heading out & forget that its there for days - and then have to re-wash everything to make it fresh again and then get around to folding the dry stuff.
4: leaving cups EVERYWHERE - although I am not as bad as an ex who used to leave coffee mugs in the garden wherever he went, only to be found days/weeks later with stuff crawled in them and more stuff growing out of them.
5: stacks of mail. I hate opening bills etc and will throw then to the side to be opened 'later' I recently cleared out 5 moving boxes of bills etc - the shredder almost had a meltdown.
6: PROJECTS! i have fabric, thread, pins, foam stuffing, wood scraps & various other bits and pieces of half-done projects scattered around the house - I have gotten better at organizing but still could use a few days of purging to get it all sorted out.

Luckily I have a roommate who is ANAL about keeping the main parts of the house SPOTLESS so that keeps me in line in the common areas - my room however...

I am very interested in the sofa but am also very allergic to cats... anyone out there know how to 'de-catify' a upholstered item - short of reupholstering it? Please advise ASAP before someone else snatches this sofa out from under me!!!

p.s. a quick thank you to the seller of teh sofa for being so upfront about the cat issue!

Mine is a non-cooking related disaster... I had 30 of my nearest & dearest friends in my apartment for a post Thanksgiving gathering when the plumbing decides to go awry and get back up. Not only did it get backed up but it started to bubble up into the shower. As its a walk-in shower, the liquid rolled out into the rest of the bathroom. The 'water' got to be about 2" deep (unimpeeded by the assortment of towels thrown down to try & mop up as much a possible) when my landlord /roommate returned from a month away.
He is such a sweetheart that he didn't bat an eye at the 30 strangers roaming his house he just dove in took care of the problem (which turned out not to be my fault as the whole street was similarly afflicted - a blockage in a main sewer line) and then went to his other house at the shore for the next few days to recover.

A relatively inexpensive solution that i used in my rental apartment was rubber floor runner ( http://www.door-mats.com/WideRibVinylColors.htm - i got mine down at one of the rubber stores n Canal Street - they had a variety of widths that they sold by the foot). I was going for a modern-ish look with similar cabinets so ran it in black horizontally, screwing it in every so often with silver hex head screws. You could do the white VERTICALLY to give an interesting look or go for one of the patterns - they have a grey that resembles brushed metal and with a bit of armour-all would shine similarly... Its easily cut with an exacto knife so installation would be very simple as long as you take accurate measurements.
Another option i have seen is to use sheets of plexiglass along the back - you could put fabric behind it , agasing the wall, and then the clear plexi on top - use screws to hold it in place & seal the seams with clear caulk. in that way you could achieve a very unique back-splash at a minimal cost
