I love that the fence is on just three sides. As a frequent car passenger, I constantly do battle with the curbside fence. Either the fence, the car's passenger front door, or my shoe ends up worse for the wear. Whoever did this was clearly thinking ahead (or had the fourth side taken out by overzealous car door opening)!

Well done!

Here are my suggestions:

Lower the pendant lamp over the dining area, or get the new lamp you mentioned.

Move the end table. Not sure where because I don't know what the rest of the space looks like, but its current position makes it tight behind that one dining chair.

Consider cabinet doors for the shelving under the counter; maybe high shine or lacquered white, or even a contrasting color like black or red?

Put a rug down under the table and chairs to define a dining space.

Consider putting a large piece of art over the sofa, and move what's currently hanging on that wall to the dining area? I don't agree with putting such a large canvas near a dining area without a buffer. You risk a chair back going into the canvas and tearing it, or proximity to food prep and food particles adhering to the fabric. I don't like my art smelling like food, but that's just me.

GOOD LUCK

corrected to say:

To ease you of your complex' influence on design, the matter (no pun intended) is easily contained by putting down the lid--before you flush.

best regards.

Friends came for the afternoon into evening. We started with a lunch of fresh and smoked kielbasa with onion and peppers; a side of braised red cabbage with apples, lightly spiced with cardamom and juniper; white borscht with hard cooked egg and diced potato; and piquant oven fries. We garnished with lots of Polish mustard and plenty of fresh Polish rye.

I would move the armchair out of the doorway and push the coffee table further from the couch, the objective being to help that space feels less crowded. You might feel like the table isn't so huge once you get more leg room and aren't squeezing around the armchair to get to the other room.

Flank steak, salt and pepper on charcoal grill.
In a bowl, make a dressing with add a tiny amount of sugar, a teaspoon or two of Sambal Oelek (garlic/chili paste), some lime juice and handful of chiffonade-cut cilantro and/or mint.

Grill stake to medium rare, rest, slice, spoon dressing over top.

My own wedding, which was actually at a (now defunct) catering hall. The entrees were stuffed portobello mushroom, jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab, chicken florentine, and a NY strip. We had over 100 guests with widely ranging appetites and EVERYONE was happy, especially us. The captain noticed we were having a hard time sitting down to eat, so she had the kitchen put together a tasting for us. Mini versions of everything the guests had. It was really wonderful.

For the last few weeks I've been feeling naked without a Benriner. I love my little mandoline, as its a great way to sneak more vegetables into our meals. I'm shaving and julienning everything in sight, and its wonderful.

The big winner is julienned radishes and carrot mixed into steamed rice, adding a little more interest to our go-to starch.

Wednesday's health supper was pan roasted chicken breast in a lemon/mustard vinaigrette, over a green salad with juliened carrot, bean sprouts and micro-thin cucumber and radish slices (t.g. for a benriner). We had a simple pastina salad with shaved asparagus on the side. Jack and Ginger cocktails and dense, sticky coconut cupcakes for dessert.

We have family in from Chicago who requested the classic wursts from the German butcher near our home.

Tomorrow for lunch, we're looking forward to a feast of brats, krainerwurst, landjaeger and lots of saurkraut and cucumbersalat. Yum!
