Gregory,

What an amazingly organized and beautiful bright space to work in - love the colors!

Can you tell me anything about the print above your bookcases (by the garland light). Is it by kozyndan? Does it have a name? The print name and artist would be greatly appreciated.

Steve,

This isn't driftwood, but it would definitely look amazing with your boats and credenza.

Pick up some mdf or an inexpensive piece of pine and start carving! Pine would be considerably softer and easier to work with. Buy a rectangular board, do some gouging, carving or scraping, sand it smooth, then stain and urethane.

Think I'll try this myself too.

Somehow green comes to my mind as well. Benjamin Moore's Providence Olive is a beautiful subtle shade that would work very well with the tone of the wood cabinetry. Use the same color throughout the kitchen and dining room so you don't have to worry about where to stop one color and start the next.

I love the cabinet hardware that designerny suggested, however in looking at your photographs, I see that you'd have to fill the holes from the existing hardware and drill new ones (for the drawers at least). Not a huge issue, but it may be difficult to camouflage the filled holes. Perhaps for the drawers you could use the smaller t-bar knobs from the same collection.

The curtains are too low, but I think they're also too dark. If you need curtains for privacy reasons, you might like to try a layered treatment - mount a shade first, up at the top of the wall, then flank it with long curtain panels on a rod, also mounted at the top of the wall. White curtains over a white shade would keep it light and airy - or add a splash of color with sheer orange curtains. Check out some of the inexpensive panels at Ikea.

Color block the area above the fireplace - tape off vertical lines the same width as the sides of the fireplace and blast up some orange or pull a blue from the print above the sofa. The fireplace in its current color would then pop out and become more of a prominent feature.

It not that there's too much on the mantel, it's just that it appears cluttered in comparison to the lack of accessories elsewhere in the room and there is very little variation in the height of the items on the mantle. Throw pillows are inexpensive accessories and are also a way to introduce more color. Why not place a low stack of books and one of the plants from the fireplace mantle on your coffee table?

Play around with the furniture arrangement until you are happy with the placement. There's no rule that says the sofa must be placed on the longest wall. Once you've found an arrangement that works for you, further define your seating area with an area rug. Some may be against blue, but the right colour of blue will work beautifully with both oranges and yellows.

To truly liven up your space, color is key and you have a wonderful start with both the wall print and your dining set. It's pure hues like those that really add a sense of energy. While the colors you selected initially are attractive, they are quite safe and sedate.

Good Luck!

kimg924,

If you want to seal it, try using a clear spray like Krylon's Low Odor Clear Finish. I'd use the matte finish to keep your sign looking as original as possible.

So many of us try to achieve perfection in ourselves and the projects we undertake. The fact of the matter is perfection is boring. It's the flaws that add character.

Hi Cindy,

I did a post on my blog recently that discussed different backsplash materials and design options. You might find it helpful. Here's the link to that post:

http://www.suzyrenovator.com/2008/02/backsplash-material-design-options/

The thermoplastic backsplash panels from ACP are a very economical choice and are available at Lowes, Home Depot and Menards. They come in a multitude of styles, not just the tin ceiling look you may have seen before. The price is so reasonable that if you did damage them when you get around to replacing the counter top, you certainly wouldn't be out much in the way of cash.

Although the manufacturer doesn't recommend installing these panels behind stoves, I have seen it done. You may want to see how much heat your oven gives off at the back when the temperature of the oven is high and be your own judge.

Although it would be great to make all your improvements in one fell swoop, budgets don't always allow - especially when it comes to the kitchen and the fact that you've just made a major investment by purchasing your new home. This is one of those time where I would encourage you to do what you can, when you can - it will all come together eventually!

Hope this helps.
