Well, it's a small kitchen. I'm worried that these two contrasting colors would shorten the height visually. That's really the only con I could find in this idea. I do agree that if you do decide to do this, make sure it complements the wood floors. By the way the pine flooring sounds charming, wish you had a pic of it.

Check Hobby Lobby also. Love the dresser knobs from there.

I'm also having this challenge myself. It sounds like your room is starving for some color so I'm thinking it should match the pillow. There's nothing wrong with mismatched wood stains but painting is going to be much more easier. If you don't like the color, you can change it a lot faster. I'm a fan of that lighter blue but the navy is moodier and more of a classic color.

I'm assuming that you got these nightstand on the cheap so why not take a risk with a color that will make a statement. I also suggest looking for dresser knobs, they make a big difference too.

I drew one of these in my journal. One day it'll come to fruition. It's a perfect place to bond with your kids. Twelve is my favorite.

Wow. Every time I go to work, I hear that song and every time I do, I make a mental note to look up what this song really means.Of course, by the time I get to the office I have actual work to do. Thanks for the info.

The tile just doesn't do The Kiss justice. There's so many beautiful colors in the original that you can use it as a starting point for the rest of this fireplace. I know you're not open to painting the brick, but are you open to tiling? I think some mosaic tile near the top of the opening will work with an Arts and Craft style type of home. I'm a fan of a jade or maybe emerald glass tile. It'll break up on the neutral and work with the art piece.

The art in the middle is just too small in the center but might work as something flanking the center art. Just be sure to create visual balance with either another art piece or an equally ethereal statue possibly something gilded to play against the center art.

Haha @Lenalula, thanks for pointing that out. He's adorable.

I really wish you had a picture of the other hanging feature. You could find a fixture that mimics the shape or curves of the piece of art. It'll sort of introduce the focal point before for you see it.

I would choose the Possini, you have the ceiling height for a larger pendant and it's simple yet interesting in texture. It also looks like it will emit a softer light into the room instead of making you feel like you're under interrogation.

Drum shades also seem to be in style and worth taking a look. Check this one out: http://www.lampsplus.com/products/white-and-brushed-nickel-contemporary-pendant-light__93331.html

I have the same color brick. I took off the shutters temporarily because they were breaking apart and the burgundy color seemed to clash. I think black shutters against the white trim is going to look great. Still not sure about the door. Right now it's a dark wood color. I've considered a royal blue.

I'm in Jacksonville, Florida and crepe myrtles do well here.

I wouldn't paint brick but I would consider staining the brick that way you can keep the brick texture.

Before! Absolutely. I'm glad I got it done before I moved in. I still have to paint the side boards and it's been two months since I moved. Right now I'm working on the doors. If you can afford a contractor then go you. I wish I did, but I had to work on the house everyday after work. I gladly did of course with the help of my boyfriend and our friends. Whites are the safest colors and it's also the easiest to paint over if you change your mind. You'll have plenty of other things to do once you're settled in. Like getting ready for your housewarming. Congrats.

Should I Paint Before or After Moving In? Good Questions

I think blues would complement the wood. I agree with the idea of a white fireplace but I think replacing the mantle with a rustic floating mantle will give it modern lines. I suggest the mantle to be a darker color to give it visual weight.

I think it would be easier to pick a color if I knew what colors are in your furniture. If your furniture is light, then bold with something in the navy family. If it's dark furniture, I say a pale blue to make the room feel open.

I used to have this wall sculpture made out of palm fronds. It was stained dark so it had more visual weight than what it really weighed. It provided the wall with a unique texture and it was also big enough to fill the space. I think something with basket weaving can create the same effect.

Also, resin materials can also be lighter than wood or metal yet look like those two materials. Let's not forget it's cheaper too. I would also avoid using glass. Maybe plexiglass would be better if you're picky about something like that.

It seems about the depth of a shadow box. I'd paint it a color that matches your decor and display a collection of memorabilia. I have a collection of carnival masks that I would display there. Since your cat is such a ham, you could artfully display his pictures in the cubby hole.

I'd also paint it black and put a colorful plate inside of it, maybe even an LED light inside on the top to light up the display.

I also like the idea of a message station or pretty bowl to hold your keys and mail but if you're prone to clutter, I don't advise it.

I'd also add another frame about the size of the cubby hole on the other side of the wall to create more balance in the room. Maybe a shelf or wall sculpture in middle of the wall for more visual interest so that you're not just looking at the cubby hole.

I envy people that have cubby holes and niches. So much opportunity to do something different. Never cover it up.

A simple solution is to move the tv about half a foot over so that the speaker isn't under the window. I would also add a book case in the other corner that's the height of the window.

Paint a color that complements the wood. The space is large enough for a dark warm color.

I'm wondering if radiator covers would distort the sound of the speakers. Here's different kinds of covers that might work:

Another solution: Which will be a big splurge item is a built-in case that will emphasize the height of the room.

I'm not happy with the bedding, I'd mix and match some pillow cases of different prints. I think a navy blue would work with the pink. I also get a marine theme vibe going on. If you can get some knobs that bring off the color in the headboard, it might work.

I like the idea of having a keepsake box on my nightstand or a container to hold glasses and bobby pins.

A lot of what you put on your night stands depends on your personality. If you're looking to do something feminine, I suggest heirloom figurines or a ceramic vase. If you're going for masculine, I'd suggest antique, leather bound books or a journal or maybe a globe or objects that you collect like a signed baseball or a framed coin collection.

I'd also hang a small picture frame on either side and make sure they align with the headboard.

Lamps are a must. Here's a couple links of lamps that I like for this space.

I'm thinking adding the wood under cushions, like another reader suggested, will not only add more stability but it'll also make it higher. It's probably going to be your cheapest and more subtle solution. There are wood risers out there, maybe you can find or make some that match or compliment the colors on the couch. By the way, love the fabrics you chose for the pillows.

If you're confident with a staple gun, I think you can reuse the bean bag fabric for an ottoman. I'd give it some spunk by adding some metal studs or some upholstery buttons of a different color to make it pop.

I also suggest using the trunk as a coffee table and it can hold throws and other things. As a table, it'll function better. You can't even open it with the tv on top of it.

Try Craigstlist or a thrift store to find a console for your tv. Curtains can also help in make this room pop.

I don't see any of your personality in this room so I wouldn't be able to suggest a color. I like to start with a piece of art or a rug and go from there. I favor teal, red and yellow.

Good luck.
