Aha, I found it: Williams Sonoma makes adhesive contact paper -- which looks like old French country tiles -- that would look great as an inexpensive backsplash, and provide you with additional color cues to work into your kitchen palette: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/sku7924129/?catalogId=97

What a wonderful, big kitchen with quality cabinets. For a French Provincial look, you might consider a contact-paper or wallpaper that looks like tile for the backsplash. Use a complementary wallpaper (such as a small print) on the soffit/bulkhead. These would also give you a palette for the rest of the walls...and for new window treatments. Above the kitchen sink consider a gathered valance -- and maybe you could make simple chaircovers that match. Calico Corners for fabric? Finally, add high-impact accent colors with pottery, etc. Stripping, sanding and re-staining wood cabinets -- a beautiful prospect -- but oh my, that's a lot of work. I'm seeing a Provence palette of yellow, blue, red perking this kitchen right up, with no need to mess with the cabinets.

My favorite part is the retaining wall - a "living wall" made with compost and net. http://www.zeroenergyideahouse.com/LivingWall.html

I agree - not bad. Paint the walls a color that is more harmonious with the rest of your (presumably) 1930s-era scheme...and then accessorize. Also - what's under those peel and stick floor tiles? Maybe something interesting....

You will regret ripping this out or reglazing. The 70s is back back back with a vengeance - and you have great stuff to get your own party started!

Replace the floor with Daltile Keystone ceramics: http://retrorenovation.com/2008/05/13/1-choice-for-retro-bathroom-flooring-3-awesome-new-choices-from-daltile/

Then, get yourself some Bradbury & Bradbury modern wallpaper: http://www.bradbury.com/sixties.html

Add coordinating towels and shower curtain, and you are all set.

I agree - the kitchen doesn't look that bad. Brown marble - great. And are those vintage steel kitchen cabinets? Yum. How about adding some great late 60s color with this Bradbury.com Mod Generation wallpaper: http://bradbury.com/dais_3.html

If you have the spirit - you could even put it on the ceilings.

Re the harvest gold - don't know if you have Sherwin-Williams down under but their Suburban Modern Palette is spot-on. You can see it here:

Lovely space! If you want to continue the 70s theme - go for the gold, that is: Harvest gold on the walls. Would be fabulous with your - yes - avocado green cabinets. I agree - a new light fixture would add tons of character. So would a valance above the windows. If you really don't need the storage above the stove, I'd say to try three nice framed prints - a big graphic statement instead.

Thanks for the plug, Lise. Readers can buy the Dishmaster on my blog, http://retrorenovation.com, or the special Dishmaster site I set up, http://dishmasterliving.com.

It's fun to be a part of such an ingenious product -- in production since 1948, and still made in America, can you believe it!

Hi from Pam at http://savethepinkbathrooms.com

Congratulations on your pink bathroom - there are legions of people who love them and actually seek them out. You know, I think that the retro decorating gods have sent you this bathroom for a reason!

Did you know that Mamie Eisenhower popularized pink? And that pink is like "retro botox" - makes you look younger!

I have one more suggestion -- how about finding a vintage chenille bedspread, pink with a design and fringe even - and adapting it into a shower curtain. I think that the softness in the bathroom would tone down the hard edges of this particular bathroom.

Oh, and we've found a company that sells toilet seats in 94 vintage colors - including 6 shades of pink!

Authentic retro - hot for sure. Capel rugs are great - there are a gazillion colors/styles/sizes - all braided. You can get them 100% wool or with some poly. They are indestructible - and used well in a room, can absolutely soften it, warm it up, give it a totally loving character.

I had a light pink sofa once - it quickly got filthy - not from people but simply from the dust in air if I opened a window. It was impossible to keep clean. It was a disaster. Be forewarned.
