I cant help thinking that what might compromise friendship for me is if I needed a desirable, affordable apartment in the market you describe and you could offer one but decided to pass?

I have done it myself and it was fine - and I'm tiny tbh. The sander I hired was not orbital - it went back and fro and had a sack to collect dust so a lot less messy. Not only is it much cheaper (I had paid pro's incomparably more previously) but you can make sure you get a good finish when you do it yourself. Hard work but very do-able.

PS - also very keen on the last option (except not "zip" on the books, obviously) and so - Jamie Oliver's new App has reviews like I've never read before...

An(other) English lover of the Silver Palate. I inherited my nana's copy and was with her when she bought it in London in 80's. Sorry to hear this news, RIP.

LOL Forestdweller! Eee its grim oop North alright.

Would that all rural poor had been able to call their homes "Sleddale Hall".

It is the remains of a (sizeable) farmhouse, of a landowning family, one of whom was first mayor of Kendal - and lots of people lived happy and fulfilled lives in Cumbria (finest place on earth). Wordsworth quite liked it.

So you can cheer up now!

No styrofoam in the first pic, though? It was solid enough to climb on and a quite different texture

Also, thaumatia is right about offering tea or coffee in England. That's so funny. I hadn't really given it any thought but now it is pointed out... if it is not offered I would be likely to mutter later "...they didn't even offer me a cup of tea..." or "they didn't offer me tea or anything". Very funny (esp since I may well decline the offer). ...I probably sound about 100 now.

I don't mind people inviting themselves to stay. I like my American friends - also friends (or friends of friends) from other countries in Europe.
(Don't really understand the bit about "US standard", lol. Are my polite US friends roughing it a bit then and not telling me.)

In Delia Smith's recipe, only half the strawberries are pureed. The rest are in chunks (which really are crucial to eton mess).
