I must be still in 1980s mode...I love all these colors, and I especially love the tangerine tango...want to paint my door that colour. Wonder if that would be very "2012" then?

Ahhhh...well.
Sometimes those cards are an annual painful reminder of how much fatter, older, and less stylish we have become since the previous round. And in contrast to our gorgeous children, we just look worse and worse every year....
So as much as it pains us (not much! sorry!) to have everyone miss us gracing the photocards, we are happy to be on the right side of the camera, taking the shots :)

I have made gift tags with them in the past, but to be honest, aside from a few that have an actual letter inside or something very special, these go into the recycle bin with gusto!
Embracing minimalism here. I am a sentimental person, but one or 2 special memory pieces or a special letter or photo has far more meaning than a Hallmark sentiment.

I like the idea of donating to St Judes, that is a nice idea.

Love it. I guess I must like masculine things (though I'm not male), because I would gladly live in this! Love the color scheme and clean lines and nautical accessories.

Our friends are moderately good at RSVPing, but it would really get up my nose if they didn't, so I guess we are lucky to have such well-mannered friends! LOL

I am teaching my kids good old fashioned manners. My grandparents absolutely insisted that we spend the morning after Christmas doing thank you letters. It was drilled into me, and while I used to sigh about it, I appreciate it now.
No email thank yous for us. My kids have to write cards the old way. People went all-out for their gifts, so a nice card is the least they can do.

Yep, these things are awesome. Our only regret was not getting it earlier to the eldest child was still getting over training wheels while the youngest could ride without them!

Can we get recipes with no canned food please? Tomatoes especially are one of the worst. The high acid foods in a can = BPA overload. Google it.

I would rather buy pre-made pasta sauce in a glass jar than use any tomatoes from a can.

Those shadow puppets are stunning.

We had a cute little Hansel and Gretel story box...it had tiny wooden dolls and you could change the scenery to tell the story, and a little witch to come out of the gingerbread house. My kids loved it.

I'm really struggling to imagine what room this would work in. So far I've only come up with a room with totally black walls and nothing else in it.

While these are super cute, we just re-use the eggs and put quarters in, or our own candy or small toys, so I'm not sure I would paint them specially for Halloween.

The schools mostly ask that you don't give out candy these days, so for kids the most practical things to give out to friends and class-mates are erasers, tattoos and pencils in seasonal theme....yes, not so exciting, but better for teeth too. These things also minimize the plastic crapola that may some day end up in the ocean.

Oh, and for the mental problem aspects of "stuff"...I think most of it is a type of blindness. If we can remove ourselves from our space and return to it with fresh eyes, see it as a stranger might, suddenly we realize how much crap we have accumulated. I find that helps a lot.

Also, cultivating the ability to like and admire something without feeling the need to OWN it....I love to admire pretty baubles, but before buying any, I catch myself and get that mental picture of me having to clean around it, move it, store it, and eventually cart it off the Goodwill and suddenly I'm happy to simply admire and move on...

Ah yes. I discovered minimalism about a year ago, and it is a long recovery from what I realize was near hoarding to where I currently am, and we still have a long way to go, but for a family of 4 very active people with many interests, we are doing pretty well.
The exciting thing is the influence it is having on my daughter. She will regularly bring me some toys or books and say "These can go to Goodwill, I don't need them any more" and out they go. She loves to do gymnastics on the floor at home, and she knows the clutter would get in the way.

I breathe a huge sigh of relief when I see clear surfaces, white space...for me it means peace, calm and sanctuary from the crazy, busy, material world we sometimes live in.

Love the plexi-glass idea. I instantly thought of that, but couldn't think of what that stuff is called.

What about discreet washi tape on the flooring (and even on the plexi glass)? I don't know how weatherproof it is, or easy to remove, but you could make some awesome little roads/cities/abstract areas for them, depending on their interests and how well they play together. For example, sometimes I find creating a little "space" for each child can work better, so they don't fight over the Lego or something...other times, shared spaces are fine.

For seating, what about simple giant floor cushions and rugs that get rolled up and get stacked just inside the door in a basket, and teach the little ones to put it away each time they are done playing out there. I would be inclined NOT to have any raised seating, given that is is a balcony...and toddlers are natural climbers. You can get really cool small rugs, so they each have one that is "special" to them, and define a spot in washi tape where they can lay it out, if they squabble about that stuff.

Free twisty tie recycled from something else....done.

Love the method for wrapping headphones. If I can perfect that I will even ditch the twisty!

I do fancy the last one, the $8 leather Etsy one. Maybe it could be a stocking stuffer for my husband. I never know what to give him.

That before really was rather spesh...

I couldn't resist seeing the after....what a massive relief! I'm so glad you kept the lovely claw-foot tub.

While the yellow is not what I would have chosen I think it really works. There is plenty of white so it looks fresh and fun and contemporary.

I'm just amazed at the size of the window in a bathroom - it goes so low! Is it on the ground level? I hope the glass is treated for privacy - hard to tell, but it seems to have windowfilm on it?

This seems like a modern, hip version of a small country school. As I child in the late-1970s I was in a mixed-age class, with clusters of tables for various skill levels, and a single teacher. Kids collaborated and helped each other. Generally it worked. At the time I think it just seemed the logical way to learn, given there were only 7 in my entire year. Maybe it was an avant garde school, but I definitely didn't notice that at the time. It was very old-fashioned in many ways. We did nature rambles, and girls learned knit, while boys did basic carpentry.

Soap! You can "color in" the glass using a fresh bar of soap and it will produce a waxy, whitish finish. Then just use damp cloths to wipe it off when you are moving out.

(My other thought was window film, or even that nice architect paper that is semi-translucent, help up with a few carefully positioned and discreet bits of tape)
