"I'd rather have this furniture than some crappy IKEA furniture while I save for nice furniture that I actually want."

Really Nick M? So you would rather have cardboard furniture than actual wood and metal furniture for the same price? I'm not saying IKEA is great, it's not. But if you're going to buy something, why not spend the same amount (or less) on something that isn't a glorified moving box?

Example: $34 for a cardboard nightstand from Smart Deco VS $20 for this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70176519/ or $30 for this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80221352/ I would rather thrift, but if you really want to buy something, buy something that isn't going to melt when you spill your drink on it.

I am going to totally buy this stuff for myself! Todd Oldham is my absolute FAVORITE designer; super cool that he's doing this!

Phew! I was terrified when I saw the before photo, thinking that they might have covered up that beautiful ceiling. I am so pleased to see that they took the steps to actually refurbish rather than destroy their house's past.

I love the idea, but after looking at their website (and especially their blog) it seems like all the projects are pretty...well, girly. Which is nice and all, but not really what I'm into. Does anyone know of a similar service that focuses more on making cool housewares or knick knacks that aren't glittery? You know, something a young couple might enjoy doing together on the weekend? I can't see me or my fiance sitting down to make frilly cases for sunglasses...

My favorite Seattle moment was when it snowed last year for a couple days straight. I was living in Capitol Hill, with plenty of bars and eateries within a block or two, and I will never forget how people flocked to the streets that night! Strangers spontaneously gathered to help push cars up the hill, people went sledding on cardboard box pieces, and the bars filled up with regulars. My now-fiance and I got to spend two whole weekdays together (rare!) since work was canceled. We're stuck in LA now and my god, I miss Seattle weather. Rainy with a chance of snow beats the heck out of a 70 degree CA winter

Our dog is a mystery Northern breed (most likely an East Siberian Laika), who, like all Northern breeds, sheds A LOT. We tried swiffer, but my problem with that is it works a little too well. Aka, I end up going through a whole box of clothes by the time I'm done. I wish they made a model that has more surface area. Anyway, we have found that good old fashioned sweeping is the best for us. Our broom has really soft synthetic "bristels" so it sort of picks up the hair instead of just tossing it around. My biggest suggestion: whatever method you choose, do it EVERY DAY. It only takes a few minutes a day (I guess that depends on how big your place is) and is easier than facing a month's worth of fluff. Also, Salmon oil is a must! And daily grooming really helps too!

*after reading TML's comment, I have way more respect for this place. Funny how the history of a place can change a story so completely.

Hmmm. Okay, well the one pro I see is simply that it creates conversation. If I were walking through the neighborhood in the photo my first thought would definitely be 'What the"h**l?" but I would also remember it is somewhat of a landmark (a very garish landmark but still). BUT, what about the poor folks who live in the other parts of that building?! You know, the people who bought their share of a very lovely piece of historical architecture, only to have some jerks move in and ruin the aesthetic of the entire building? I think in this particular case, where you are sharing part of a whole, you REALLY need to respect the idea of THE WHOLE. One house, not connected to anything else I say do what you want. A bright pink house, ok. Whatever. But the middle section of a classic building? Talk to the other people in the building first. That's all I'll say.

This would look so much better in our living room than the folded up army blanket currently serving as Fen's bed. Not to mention it probably collects less fur. Oh huskies, why must you shed forever?

..Echo park is NOT the "Hills" and thank god!!! I live near Echo park, it happens to be one of my favorite La neighborhoods. Beverly (the) Hills is full of snobs and is unfortunately used to define all of La far too often. I understand wanting to have a catchy headline, but I'm a stickler for accuracy when it comes to my city.

How cool would it be to have the pillows on a couch in your design studio? Of course, most clients probably wouldn't get the reference (trust me, you'd be surprised) but it would be a nice touch.

This is a great idea! I love how luminous it looks in the first photo. It would be hard for me to resist putting things on top of it though, flat surfaces always tend to accumulate clutter in my place.

I definitely think a colorful rug would help. Colorful ANYTHING for that matter. We just moved into a historic hotel-turned-apartment where all the preexisting cabinets, walls, and floors are various shades of gray, white, and beige and we are dying for some color! You can find pretty decent rugs for cheap on the target website or at ikea. And I would replace that beanbag with a cozy floor-sitting area (comfy rug and throw pillows), I think it would look nicer and feel sort of novel to guests.

Wow! I'm amazed at the idea and the execution of the design...it doesn't really feel like a "home" so much as a hang-out, but then I'm also not a skateboarder.

This is so inspiring! My fellow and I have been putting off our wedding for lack of funds. I've always loved the idea of planning a wedding, but now that it's on MY shoulders it seems more stressful (especially on a very small budget) than fun. My parents offered their house as a venue; I shrugged it off originally because of the location, but I'm starting to think it might not be a bad idea.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a magazine covering a variety of living styles. How a person arranges their home is about more than aesthetics, it's a glimpse into someones personality, into their head. I love seeing articles about people whose spaces are vastly different from the typical home. Can't we just be entertained by a slice of someone's intimate life rather than judging this stranger for having too much stuff? Why can't it just be interesting?
