Last year, all of my fifth grade students carved spoons, which is often the first project in the Waldorf school's woodworking curriculum. The children were so proud of their work, and each piece was so unique. I like the mention above of the idea that "the spoon is already present in the wood and the maker is just bringing it out."

For plants, I have had great success with snake plants, zizi plants, pothos, and aloe vera. Otherwise, I would choose natural materials as much as possible like solid wood. I try to use framed artwork along with original pieces. It is wonderful if the decor can tie into the curriculum. (I teach Waldorf fifth grade this year and have drawn from ancient civilizations for my decor.) You can find some good small storage options at Ikea that are affordable and look nice.

As a teacher, I have them on the legs of my students' desks. We dyed the balls to soften the color. We were able to get a large number of used tennis balls donated from a tennis center.

Hooray! This house is around the corner from me, and we stroll past it all the time. The extension goes to a bungalow in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur. I don't know if it's still Todd Dominey's place, but it has been on and off the market a couple of times in the last few years. I think it might have sold in '07 or '08.

I like many things about the space, love the kitty. I like the chalkboard entries, too, but "Weltschmerz" is what those folks have. Still, pretty cool.

I also saw the house this spring. It was pretty cool, but not my favorite place on the tour. I notice that it seems like all of the pictures linked are from the addition. I liked that part of the house and the outdoor space more than the original house. Still, I'd be pretty happy with it if it were my place. Here's another house I liked on the tour that's in Decatur: http://rainshinehouseatlanta.blogspot.com/

I agree with the fresh mozzarella. I actually just picked some up today to put with peaches and basil. Maybe now I'll try tomato, too!

In the classroom, my students use it to clean their beeswax crayons. Olive oil or other vegetable oil makes a good polish if colors have rubbed off on each other, and the children enjoy getting their crayons nice and clean again.

Put a small amount of water on a low boil on the stove. Add a few drops of peppermint oil or other essential oil of choice. In my house, it just takes a few minutes for the place to smell minty fresh.

In response to the question of how this is art, a good and simple starting place is the wikipedia entry on installation art. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Installation_art

Here's a good excerpt from the entry that I think applies to this work:

Essentially, installation/environmental art takes into account the viewer’s entire sensory experience, rather than floating framed points of focus on a “neutral” wall or displaying isolated objects (literally) on a pedestal. This leaves space and time as its only dimensional constants. This implies dissolution of the line between art and life; Kaprow noted that “if we bypass ‘art’ and take nature itself as a model or point of departure, we may be able to devise a different kind of art… out of the sensory stuff of ordinary life” (Kaprow 12).
