I forgot to mention one of the very sweet things about this recipe/method. You know how whole wheat pasta often gets all gummy and icky when it is boiled? Well, you can make this using WW pasta and it doesn't do that. I think it's about the lack of agitation since it's not actively boiling, but I've served this to folks who hated the texture of WW pasta and they liked it.

Thanks for riffing on my recipe!

mlleErica, Ele, the recipe was designed so kids could do it alone or with minimal help, thus no stove. Plus, it's a great example of kitchen magic: looks like it's not working until right at the end when "poof" it becomes mac and cheese. So kids love it.

Ladidi, practice the food flipping trick with dried beans over a (made) bed. Much neater.

"accessible and inspiring" blush

Thanks for the great review of the cookbook. I must admit that while all the kind words I am hearing (here and elsewhere) are wonderful, I am really loving the photos of the kids in the kitchen!

Emma, given the nutritional information, yes you can have it for breakfast. In fact, I think that's a marvelous idea! btw, this recipe had candied ginger until about a week before it went to press (long story) so maybe we were telepathically linked...

aprilf00l, I'm sorry you had problems getting the butter to cream. That's the right amount of sugar and I haven't had a problem with it. It isn't a lot of butter/sugar so if you are using a stand mixer, it may not get to all of it...maybe? i know I tried to whip ~1/4 cup of cream in my KA the other day and it took forever!

This is one of my favorite bread recipes! I have even made several variations of it, one of which is now my go-to cinnamon bread. It also makes killer cinnamon rolls.

I'll second (third?) the ice cream or sorbet, perhaps in combination with lavender. Grind the herbs with the sugar for better texture and flavor.

I bought half a cow many years ago and plan to again as soon as I work out logistics. It is so much easier to get food I trust that way. If Farmgirl was closer, I'd buy one of her lambs but shipping costs would me really awful! At least people who buy her lambs know they are raised without garbage in their diets and in a lamb-like environment.

Now I must go find all the articles about vegetables and post pointed queries about the treatment of the people doing the labor to bring the vegans their GMO soy.

I am pretty good about not wasting too much food at home, although I have post-its on the chest freezer, tubs of bulk stuff, etc. instead of a whiteboard, which is a much better idea.

My food waste victory for the month is this: After seeing a local grocer throwing away perfectly good produce, I publicly shamed, err, wrote about it on my site and the next thing you know they aren't throwing food away anymore! It's a small victory, in this case cheap, bread-ready bananas but they say they are also donating more stuff to the food bank so I am feeling good about it.
