I moved immediately after my breakup, so I *had* to throw all my ex's stuff in a box (mostly in case he decided he wanted them again).

It sat in my garage for over a year and I hadn't gone through it. I got in another relationship and I was moving again. (I really like moving, have been in 7 places since Sept 2009.) I was going to try to Freecycle everything, but most of it was honestly just crap. (I guess I could've donated the clothes.) So I threw it in the dumpster.

I don't understand the urge to keep all of your ex's photos/things/momentos. That feels too much like trophy-ing to me. I didn't even have a bad breakup; I just don't see the point of trying to hold onto something that is obviously in the past. Then again, I'm someone who lives very much in the now, and there are only a few items I still own that I owned more than 3 years ago. (My piano being one of them, but I have a new couch, new bed, new TV, new-to-me car, etc.)

My partner came with a set of Shun knives. They are wonderful, but need to be sharpened specially, because the steel is different from American steel. (We just get it hand sharpened.) It's definitely a luxury item, but it makes eating at home so much more fun (and probably saves us money in the long run).

I JUST purchased the litter box but it's out of stock! My cats (and I) would love these items. :D

I make most of the decisions, since (1) I am usually pickier, and (2) I'm the one spending money on it. I do get his input (and usually he has SOME input, not just "whatever") but I'm the one who usually brings up ideas and does the research.

I have the Simple Human garbage can which cost $180 and I absolutely love it. It's gorgeous, operates smoothly, still behaves like it's new, and the details (such as the holes on the inside cans to hold onto the excess garbage bags) make it absolutely awesome. Plus, the garbage can is a pretty large, visible, and often-used part of my kitchen. If I'm going to splurge on something (that's not larger, more visible, or more often-used), why not the garbage can?

I would consider getting square labeled one if the look matched my kitchen better. It's so cute!

Before I lived in a Swiss dorm, where it was mandatory for us to clean the communal kitchen, I had no idea that ovens and fridges need to be cleaned. >.< @RPLOWMAN, I was that kind of person.

I actually really like the fact that Apartment Therapy has a number of "back to basics" posts sprinkled throughout. As someone who spent the majority of her life studying and NOT learning household tasks, these are quite useful to me. Thanks!

I hope not! Mine don't match at all. (I'm a match everything or match nothing sort of person.)

I traveled alone as an unaccompanied minor on international travel (13 hours!) when I was 8. The biggest problem was that I got bored. Handheld video game devices weren't really popular yet. The next year, I traveled with another girl my age and that was a lot of fun. :)

The first time I got to travel in a foreign country all by myself, I was 17, and it was Russia. That was definitely a memorable experience and would repeat again.

But I think I have a more adventurous mother than most.

I already pre-ordered one... Mostly because I love the 'set it and forget it' ideology.

@Lucy Lamare: The house I spent most time growing up in had a dining room and a living room that we almost never used. My mother bought a 19th century reproduction piece of a 15th century style table with matching chairs to put in the dining room. It seats 8 comfortably and has gorgeous, gorgeous hand carved details. She was always worried us kids would get it dirty, though. So instead, we'd eat at the breakfast table in the kitchen or on the couch in the family room.

@kozy11: I only buy rugs second hand or I would never be able to stand getting it dirty at all (even though there's a no shoes rule). I buy everything I like under $100 that seems like a good value, with the plan of reselling the ones I don't end up using (aka CL return policy).

I go for how it feels against my feet, and I'm trying to generally match the early 1900's look. I have a smaller house so I buy small rugs (5'x8' max) and then just layer them when I need more space covered.

I just bought my first home. I splurged on the floors (handscraped hardwood ftw) and replaced all the windows (they were single pane and painted shut). The next most expensive purchases were bedding from Pottery Barn and drapery (rods and curtains are surprisingly expensive and fairly difficult to save much on). Everything else I scoured CL and plan to refinish and reupholster. The next somewhat expensive thing I plan to buy is a nice chandelier to replace the ugly 70s one that came with the house.

I absolutely love the design!

It's also extremely frustrating that I can't just purchase something from the collection online.

I'm an adult, and I love baths. I try to limit myself to 2 a week. I know several other people like me, for whom no tub would be a deal breaker. But of course, if the selling price is a good enough deal, the buyer might be willing to do the renovations and put in a bath (again).

I'm not sure I'd call those "affordable" (even with a "relatively" qualifier in front). I've only spent over $100 on one piece of furniture so far (though of course everything was bought second hand).
