My mother showed me as a young child how to wash a chicken and I've done it since till a few months ago when I failed a health and safety quiz because I did so. I was pretty relieved. It's not nice at all. I always have to get my hands in there and rip fat etc. rinse and then afterwards I have to basically sterilize everything with boiling water and vinegar. What a headache!

Now all I need to do is basically bung it in and thank goodness for that.

I'm making pelmeni today and seeing as I've got a jar of sauerkraut, I may well try this out. I'm trying to stock up my freezer for the winter which is only now starting to rear it's ugly head with some lovely flooding.

VarEniki, now I will deffinately be trying that, maybe with cheese.

caralovesyou, I think we must have been rasied by the same pack. I'm always getting stick for tearing lumps off roasts and walking away with them. I'll tear cheese, bread, sliced of smoked fish, sausage and cake and just walk away. I am so hated in my mother's kitchen.

I'm very sensitive to temperature. I can't have anything hot as I BURN. I'm forever envious of my family who can sit drinking scalding cups of tea while I have to sit with my cup for 10 minutes till it's just above luke warm temperature. The worst part of it is it usually means I have to have my food cold or keep reheating to only let it cool to the 'right' temperature. Ironically I don't enjoy cold beverages.

Oh and I'm practically OCD when it comes to food and 'abnormalities'. If there's a speck in my egg, a spot on my apricot, a hole in my apple.. I will eye it suspiciously. This causes a 'Diva Supreme' versus 'Shut up and eat- it's nature' battle. If I remove the offending article it usually works with me pleasing both sides.

Roast guinea fowl with fresh figs, pickled vegetables and organic cider.

I'll be looking into a lot of pumpkin recipes this weekend. Can't deny All Hallow's Eve is coming up.

I wish I still ate broccoli because that looks delicious! I've come close to eating far too many boiled caterpillars to give it a try though.

Very true. Many of the chickens we have for roast are pink after good cooking. Usually in the thigh area. I've had a fright once or twice but my mother reassures me it's normal. A tad chewy but it tasted fine and I lived to tell the tale.

If you've been cooking a more than reasonable time, your oven isn't broken and the chicken is by no means raw... you're probably ok to go.

Guys BEWARE! The frost isn't so much about making them sweeter as it is about making them safe to eat. They actually contain parasorbic acid which causes an upset stomach and even kidney damage. The berries are made safe to consume by freezing, drying or heat treating. Freezing for a few days usually helps with the bitterness though and is my chosen method.

I like to pick mine in November and December when the great frost is on- I then bung them in the freezer for good measure. Here we eat them in a jelly with cold smoked meats. It's not very exciting but I guess the bitterness has generally put people off from doing more exotic culinary things with it.

These are lovely and so practical. It's a nightmare getting wax off of things.

stylefyles, the saying 'accidents happen' seems to cover it really. The table is made all the more impractical because it slopes in the direction of the books.

I wouldn't say never to this coffee table but I would like to see another version.

Being British, I can agree. I just don't get pie. Of course, we're into our pies but not the same degree as Americans. A pie contest here would be laughable. I'd need to taste a reeeally good one to be convinced its not worth getting rid of the crust all together and simply making a tart of it.

In theory yeah it's lovely but I can't think of anything more miserable than spilt coffee leaking on my precious books or cracking my leg on one of those seriously pointy corners.

I don't but that's only because I am an art student and a very picky one a that!

However, I might add to people that it's a very good idea to get artists when they're young before they are qualified etc. We sell our work dirt cheap and our commisions are also dirt cheap, or at least mine are. You could buy yourself a starbucks lunch with the price range I have in mind. Total tip guys, get them when they're young, support them and when they're doing very well you won't need to pay nearly as much.

Still, supporting an artist has to be a piece of charity if anything. You can happily say that money may well have led them on to a successful career or bought them the materials required for a piece of work that got them popular. Every time you buy an artist's work, especially a fledgling, there is a sigh of relief. It's like 'boy... I'm going to get there'. By buying you make it happen.

Plus you have something completely unique and original. Perfect!
