Tired of the Same Old Sandwich? Where To Find New Flavor & Ingredient Inspiration

Some impressive work going on! While philosophically I'm sympathetic to the making the bread theme, in fact I have such fabulous and varied bread available to me in the Bay Area that making my own doesn't make sense -- except, of course, to save money. But for the pleasure in eating it, we have some incredible bakeries whose bread is a joy.

Depends on what you are using the mushrooms for. I remember making Julia Child's mushroom soup from Mastering.... and I believe that she stopped the process when the mushrooms had expressed back into the pan their juices along with the butter they'd absorbed. I don't believe she went on to caramelize them. Makes sense for soup, I think, wanting to have that juice out in the broth -- or at least an alternative way of doing things.

I would recommend Fish Without a Doubt by Rick Moonen and Roy Finamore. It was a Gourmet Cook Book Club selection.

Change your focus and thus your "meaning" for an object. Imagine the person that can make good use of it right now. Make a gift of your possession to that stranger by donating it to an organization that will see that that stranger gets your gift. You are not giving up something; you are being generous to someone else.

RE: books
You don't loan out books you have enjoyed? It is a pleasure to have shelves of books read and unread. Those that I don't get around to reading again can be lent to those who share my interests. I find it rewarding to lend books to friends who would likewise find them informative or funny or well-written or whatever it is that recommends them.

RE: having not more than one glass per person around (very efficient!). Consider that we eat not only with our mouths and tongues but with our eyes. And a well-set table invites us to enjoy -- even or especially if it's set for just one or two.

Hmmm! I hope you don't just give her a gift of something other than what she's specifically asked for without discussing this with her. Seems unwise.

@carinb - Yes, it is amusing to think of a cow giving eggs. The term 'dairy' as applied to eggs actually is shorthand for "in the dairy case" because many, many years ago groceries were not really big supermarkets but closer to what mom-and-pops are today. There was a refrigerated (not frozen - that was for the Birds Eye frozen vegetables) case where milk, cheese, butter, cream and, yes, eggs were kept. They didn't then have things like fresh pasta to sit there. And it wasn't 'pasta' but would be dried macaroni or spaghetti out on the regular shelves. A different era but the term persists.

Nothing beats cacio e pepe and there are many American dishes where it makes sense. But it is the least used spice on my shelf. In my case using pepper routinely would be an unthinking habit that I learned from my older relatives, not a considered choice. But that's just me and what I cook.

This is a very interesting video of a lecture on a study by Christopher Gardener of Stanford's School of Medicine on comparing popular diets and their effects on not only weight loss but also factors like serum lipids that are said to relate to heart disease. Not only is his study impressively set up but he's a fun lecturer -- and a long-time vegetarian. It's called the A to Z study (Atkins to Zone, and it includes Ornish and Mediterranean-like diet).
