This is the saddest post on AT. To think that Maxwell was a Waldorf teacher...

I have a door like that and I hate the half lemon slice window. I am on the lookout for a wall hanging that would ideally cover most of the door. That would mean less light, of course, but it seems like a minor sacrifice to me.

At least this is not offensive to anyone. Still, it doesn't belong on the main page.
Generally I don't mind stretching the boundaries as long as it is related (rearrange the bedroom to make space for a play corner). This is in sync with what I thought AT was all about, based on Maxwell's background in Waldorf education: making a home beyond merely decorating. But it turns out I misunderstood. They want to attract more traffic at any cost.

I find black and wood is lovely together, as long as a) there aren't too many other colors around, and b) the black furniture is painted, not stained.
Beyond that, I would recommend going slowly. Even though you are excited about having your very own, real place, don't rush in to get everything right away. Let your place and your taste evolve. See if you can dress up existing pieces and thrift store finds with paint, pillows, quilts, etc. until you find something you really love.

I would definitely paint it, it will bring out the minimal handles beautifully. Choose a very pale shade of your dominant color for the body and a slightly bolder shade for the top.

My kitchen was originally oak with black dishwasher and stove. I painted the lower cabinets black and the upper white. I am happy with it, it looks less like one big built in.

When I was in college, I had rollerblinds over my bookshelves to hide any clutter.

I admire the creativity, but I don't get why you would put a cage around a bulb. Either you have a shade or you go bare (with a beautiful round incandescent bulb and a dimmer).
