Wow, such a big space and it just begs to be used. How to do it cheaply???!!!

Scour craigslist daily. You never know what you might get for free or next to free. I'm sure you can get tons of pots and free plants.

Plant things that stay green year round--you can supplement with pretty flowers in the spring/summer, but mostly you want to avoid the death look.

The size of the yard pretty much dwarfs what you have done--can you bring the trees and bushes back toward the house--maybe create a barrier wall with tall things in the middle of the yard?

Maybe with enough free stuff you can get it to look like this:

You also definitely need some color. Like this maybe:

A hairdryer, if they don't use the same voltage as you.

It's a friend, people, not some unemployed cousin camping out on your couch. A list of do's and dont's is probably not very appropriate (or will win over any new guests). The guest is coming to visit for fun, as is probably not expecting to be accosted with a list or rules akin to moving into a victorian era boarding house (no men allowed! no tv after 10! only put shillings in the pay heater!)

I love the stools and think you'll be glad in the long run that you bought them. My vote is with the others on building a cheap step-up platform. Research DIY platform beds on AT and you'll find a bunch of easy and safe ideas that can be used for your chairs. Then again, a lower shelf would probably be easier.

I think this is a neat idea, although you could go a lot cheaper and just keep an egg timer in the bathroom.

My favorite is grilled as well. Generally with a mildly spicy lime marinade.

I only get 4 and have a hard time getting to read them all. I do drool over all of them in the bookstore...
If only I were a trust fund baby, I would stay at home all day and read decorating and home improvement mags.

The frames and that mobile hanging from the ceiling look completely overwhelmed by the wall. I would prefer a big giant oil painting with some bright colors that contrast with that horrible wall color and maybe compliment the couch. Better yet, repaint the walls.

Hopefully school stuff, but probably anything they can get their hands on, including but not limited to frogs, mud, wet toys, books and candy.
