These kitchens are not small. Maybe #7 is.

I'm almost 40, and don't have kids. I feel like I exist in a separate universe from women who do have kids (different priorities, schedules, focus, etc.). I have just a couple female friends who are also kid-free, about my age, smart, and funny — and they're very dear to me!

I really believe in the sisterhood of kid-free women; we have to look out for each other, especially as we get older. One of my kid-free friends is in her 60s, and I'm quick to help her out when she needs something — partly because I love her, and partly because I know that one day I'll be in her shoes!

Love the overall feel, but I could not live like that.

Books stacked everywhere! Gah! Time for a storage unit — or a yard sale.

Also, yes, stairs seem treacherous.

This is beautiful. I'm feeling very curious about your kitchen!

I do dishes once a day to save on propane, most of the year.

Especially during the winter. I take a shower at night, and then do my dishes — all hot water-consuming activities in one go! Saves kicking on the water heater all the time.

Lynnms — I love your idea! Totally going to do that.

This is utterly magnificent. I even like your fridge art. :)

I liked it when the Amateur Boxing sign was over your bed! It looks like you've got a new place, and worked your magic again. I actually like this new place more!

Marvelous space! I love the concept, the execution, the whole aesthetic.

Blandwagon, I'm guessing those supports along the kitchen counter are weight-bearing for the bed loft.

I would love a house tour! Looks like you've made some great choices. You totally pulled off the dark living room -- it still feels airy and inviting. This looks like a great place for a party! The ottomans make it feel loungy — totally covet that big stuffed ottoman, btw.

Marvelous! I like that you hung a picture on the Expedit to make it even more wall-like. Your TV sort of looks like it has antlers. :)

Very brave choice to put the bed near the front door. I don't know if I could handle that myself, but with those limited choices I might have done it too.

I have a very similar color scheme to yours. This is what my apartment wants to look like when it's all grown up.

Just one thing -- there's no picture of your kitchen sink. I understand why you couldn't fit it in, but I bet it's adorable. Darn.

Love this! Someone else said it feels like a cabin in the woods but in Brooklyn -- exactly!

Love the exposed brick, the fireplace, the garden, the stairs, the use of the upper closet as nightstand space. And the colors and textures you used to bring it all together.

What I find most inspiring is the way you both use the space, the each-ness and the together-ness. E.g., I'm guessing that piano is more important to one of you than the other (maybe?). And there it is, cleverly melded in with everything else. Love it.

Looks like an ad. No personality. Sterile.

I know it's not against the rules to be rich, but on the part of the resident, there's more money than imagination going on here.

If this were just a hidden-storage contest, sure, it's the winner. But that's about it.

Beautiful. I love the striped wall. It looks textured, though; I'm curious if that's just how it looks in the pictures, or a deliberate painting technique, or something inherent to the wall. Also love that you incorporated the lampshade!

You seem to have a some tree branch arrangement in your living room window, yes? Or a mobile? Something's going on in that corner.

I deeply love your bedroom. In addition to the obvious things to love, those pillowcases are perfect.

Actual TYPEWRITERS on the actual WALL. That is hot.

I like the overall sense of airiness and cleanliness with gritty, textured accents. Marvelous.

Love the mechanical print (engraving? something) over the bed, too.

I love the way you incorporated the floating/tilty wall into the decor. Very cool.

It looks like you might have an awesome outdoor space, too. Will we see a Small Cool Outdoor entry from you? I'm curious.

I love your space! So cozy and inviting. You've struck a marvelous balance of having many objects of interest and personality while maintaining a sense of spaciousness. I'm going to steal your suitcase-as-storage idea.

Love those mythology prints -- they appear to be nicely mounted but not framed, which I applaud. Full frame jobs are really overrated.

And I *adore* your kitchen.

When I saw the Eames chair on the shiny wood floor with the starburst clock, I thought, Oh my god, Dooce has an apartment.

Still, it's inviting and pleasing. Don't listen to the jaded ATers who've seen too many deer heads. It's a lovely space.

I love your space! Congratulations on downsizing and on going car-free!

I agree, it would be great to see more pics of kitchen/bathroom. I saw Dane's explanation. Maybe you could post a link to more pics on Flickr (I think that's okay; other contestants have done so in comments, and now the favoriting is over anyway).

I really admire the spirit of your entry. Sometimes I feel like this contest should be broken down by income bracket instead of square footage! (Not really, but some folks are clearly drawing on more resources than others. I have a cool apartment, but I'm a librarian/proofreader living in Vermont without a car -- my options are pretty narrow!) Your space really captures what Small Cool is about -- maximizing and using your imagination and creativity. Bravo!

Your space is so cozy, imaginative, and inviting. This is what the Small Cool contest is all about -- maximizing what you've got, imaginatively. Well done.

It's a nice Tumbleweed sort of house. I like the idea, but the decor doesn't really blow my skirt up. Like some other folks, I wonder if this is a primary residence.
