The thought of being expected to walk barefoot or in stockinged feet on my host's bathroom floor grosses me out.

I used the corn litter at our weekend house and when we came back the next week the litter pan was empty and we discovered that the corn based litter had attracted mice inside, who ate what they could and then chewed and stashed the rest -- all over the place, in every nook and cranny... inside boots and slippers, between the mattress and box spring, everywhere you can think of. It was really gross.

Daniele M: I had the same problem with moisture accumulating in the sealed bag but solved that with a tip I read on another site: chill the lemons first, just in a bowl in the fridge, then put them in a zip loc. Nowhere near the moisture you'd get putting them in the plastic bag at room temperature. Dunno why but it makes all the difference!

Re-purposing metal cans is great for indoor plants (and a little clear nail polish on the bottom rim takes care of the rust issue) but I've tried it for outdoors on the terrace -- and the heat simply fries the roots. Looks good but not a happy environment for the actual plants. Maybe succulents or very shallow rooted plants would thrive?

I confess I bought these -- hoping I could use them as disposable wash cloths. I use a wash cloth to wash my face and I want a clean one each time, so I go thru a lot and I don't like hanging them around to dry before they can go into the hamper.
Anyhow, these disposable hand towels suck -- they're thin + not much different from a sheet of Viva paper towels. The dispenser is seriously ugly in the bathroom. I doubt these will catch on so probably nothing to get too worked up about...

I use the same stool as a side table and I've topped it with a Planisphere (star chart) luckily exactly the same diameter as the top of the stool -- the bottom disk with the stars on it is dark blue and the second/top rotating disk is clear and black. The top disk is heavy duty plastic and just wipes clean.
Looks great and cost about $15

Oils go rancid very quickly and probably aren't something the home cook wants to buy in bulk (or gallon size). Surprise to me, Harold McGee, food writer, says storing them in the refrigerator makes them go bad even faster.

I had a black bathroom, including black tub, in Cesaer's Palace in Las Vegas. Unless you have daily maid service, black shows everything, all the soap splashes, etc. The tub looked absolutely disgusting after a bath...

how are two bath tubs excessive and a waste of water? , I don't understand how or why it's wasteful. Don't most couples draw a fresh bath for themselves? What's the difference if it's in a different tub? Is a another tub in another bathroom allowed? Or is the issue again showers vs. baths?

For ATers in NYC, where we get out water from upstate reservoirs, don't beat yourself up over wanting a few extra gallons of water in your bath. Think of it as protecting your upstate neighbors from floods when all that snow melts...
From the Oneonta Daily Star:
"DEP spokesman Michael Saucier said 452 million gallons of water a day are being released from the Pepacton Reservoir, and 970 million gallons a day are being released from the Cannonsville Reservoir, which is the maximum allowed by the Flexible Flow Management Plan."

i've had luck replacing a lost pot knob with an empty thread spool, screw and nut. I'm not sure how durable a cork would be.
The scissor/sandpaper "tip" doesn't work (people also say steel wool, which doesn't work either)

Once the shower drain under the cabin froze solid and I had no hair dryer, portable heater or even a long extension cord so i crawled into the crawl space under the house and started and tended a mini fire directly under the bend in the pipe until it warmed up and the ice in the pipe melted. I had the same problem with my round table! I hated the "hang-over" of rectangle placments and round ones don't cover enough width-wise.

I made placemats (and coasters and shelf liners) with leftover pieces of "floating" vinyl floor covering. It cuts easily with an xacto or even scissors. As diyordie suggested, just "cut them to fit around the particular arc of your table."

Floating vinyl has kind of a cushioney foam backing so it won't scratch the table and is super easy to just wipe off with a sponge. Wide color and pattern choices available, plus a small piece or a remnant wouldn't be very expensive at all. I roll the placements up to stash between meals...
