ELFay, you do not have much of an imagination ... there are many reasons why a single, childless person would need more than 300 square feet of living space- perhaps you like to entertain more than 2 or 3 people frequently, perhaps you have frequent overnight guests, perhaps you work from home, perhaps you cook a lot and need more than an efficiency kitchen, ... etc. I rarely comment on articles such as this because it always stirs up the "holier-than-thou" crowd with their myopic view of the world. Too many people forget that everyone is unique. People have different needs and the things that you need are not necessarily the same as the things that other people need. I grew up with wood heat and would not have it at all now. I do pretty well with natural gas supplemented with an electric heater in one room that does not have a duct. Wood stoves are likely better now, but the smell of wood smoke would permeate the house and it's difficult to distribute the heat. The room that had the stove would sometimes be unbearably hot and other rooms would be unbearably cold. Also, it seemed that the fire would die down or go out at the most inopportune moments. hahaha oh well, it's not something I have to deal with now :) Alternative Heating for Old Farmhouse? paper plates and disposable utensils will help a lot (you can get eco-friendly disposable dishes in many stores- even many 'regular' grocery stores) and you can probably compost some of them ;) Tips for Making Thanksgiving Clean-Up a Little Easier |

I picked up a copy of this the other day and was pretty disappointed in it ... basically it's as vapid and lacking in substance as the majority of their programming these days. It's not something I would subscribe to nor is it something I would buy on a regular basis. HGTV Launches Their Own Magazine |

Considering that the retailers put out Christmas stuff in September, it's probably not too early to have a holiday party in November. I agree with other folks in that if you do decide to have a party in November, don't make it a Christmas-themed party, just make it a "holiday" or fall party. I'm not much of a traditionalist and I too get tired of seeing Christmas decorations and hearing Christmas music for 3 months. Holiday Parties: How Early is Too Early? |

I purged my books a few years ago and am happy for it. I could probably get rid of a few more, but for now they are pretty clutter free (especially now that I buy the majority of them for my Nook) ... All of my CDs are boxed up and stored away, everything is on my computer and there's no need to have the CDs sitting around collecting dust and taking up space in my living area :D ... it was a nice feeling to get rid of a few hundred books that I had not opened in years, though. very nice. I'm going to tackle my guest room this spring. It was an ok room for a while, but I want to revamp it. Right now it's a holding place for some "stuff" that I need to sort through before recycling or disposing of it, haha. Gorgeous Guest Rooms |

I cook almost everything I eat from scratch. It really doesn't take that much time to make interesting meals and it can be fun to experiment. Since I live alone, I usually make enough for 4 servings which gives me two lunches and two suppers. It's really not that difficult to learn to cook, either. Too many people who say they can't cook try to start off by making something elaborate and complicated instead of starting simple. :D Start simple and move up from there :D Day 9: Find a New Recipe and Cook Tonight! I like the simplicity, but I think there is a limit as to how much to have around... houses filled with MCM stuff can really look "overdone". I don't care for the more "funky" stuff that comes from that era, however. Poll: What Do You Love Most about Mid-Century Modernism? |

I like this idea ... my dining room walls are yellow (Butter Up from Sherwin-Williams) with shiny white wainscoting. I had darker green walls in the past, but I think I am much happier with the lighter colors. Light & Bright: Dining Rooms with Pale Walls |

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with curtains ... right now I only have them on two windows in bedrooms that I almost never go into. I don't have any in the other rooms. I tend to prefer my windows "naked" :) I don't like the look of elaborate, fussy curtains. The few that I do have are simple tab-topped panels. They are colored though ;) Adding Color Through the Use of Curtains |
