I have the same table. Remember that it is a convertable table. I think that adding a veneer would compromise the ability of the table to open up and fold away again. At least of my table, all the components fit rather closely and adding any thickness would cause problems. That said, I like the light color.

I would love to live somewhere cheaper, but most of the jobs in my industry are in the NYC area (and I live in Bergen County, also on the expensive list). I second the poster who said that if you are willing to forgo the "cool" neighborhoods, you are much more likely to afford something. I live just one town over from a "cooler, hipper" town and pay about 500 dollars less for a similar apartment. I do dream, though, of living somewhere affordable where I can actually get a-- well renovated, a/c, laundry and parking--place for a good price.

How Long Can We Keep This Up?

My current apartment. It is in a town where 1 bedrooms in owner-occupied 2 family houses go for 1500 a month (I hate owner occupied). I have a 2.5 bedroom apartment with a private deck in a 3 unit apartment building for 1200 a month. I think it was purely because the landlord and I "clicked" and he could tell I would be the ideal tenant (pay on time, no loud parties/music). He lets me have pets, and when I moved in game me a month's free rent if I wanted to paint the place myself (which cost half of what the rent would be) in any colors I want. Yes, it is an old building and was last "renovated" in the 80s, but it has wood floors, high ceiling, large windows, and did I mention the private deck?

I would have ripped up the dirty, nasty forest green carpet in the kitchen(!). The entire apartment had hardwoods except the kitchen. But I was too scared. If the landlord felt it was necessary to carpet the kitchen, who knows what might have been underneath.

It's a great sofa. Last year I was literally on my way to buy a new, but inexpensive sofa when on a whim I stopped at a consignment store, and immediately fell in love with a 60's green tweed sofa in perfect condition. And I don't regret the purchase. The only thing I worry about is that if I ever move, it's going to be hard to find a place that can accomodate it (it is 9 feet long), So, go for it.

One thing that I have found effective is instead of looking for apartment listings on craigslist is to post an "apartment wanted" ad there. I have found several great apartments, including my current place, that I would have never found otherwise, when I was contacted by landlords looking to fill vacancies.

I initially chose my apartment because it was big, affordable and had a deck, but I've been pleasantly surprised by how walkable it is. So far I can walk to the following:
1. Grocery store
2. Laundry
3. Coffee shops
4. Dozens of places to eat/drink, including my new favorite bar
5. A small but nice park
6. A hair salon (my newest find, and 2 doors down)

Plus there is 24 hour bus transit into NYC right at my corner.
I'm loving all of this and it is nice to be able to really cut down on driving.

Before. My criteria is "Is this item worth moving X number of miles and paying for it, in time, money, aching backs?" It's amazing how much I realize I've accumulated, and how much of it is nothing that I really need or want (and I live so lightly that people actually comment on how minimal my places are).

I agree--a sofa. I just moved from a tiny studio to an apartment with a real living room. The first thing I did was find a sofa. I was lucky enough to find the Best Sofa Ever (tm), and only then did I start thinking about the rest. I just really wanted a place to sit that wasn't my bed!
