the garden-on-a-bug cracked me up.

i've seen similar foldable pots cropping up (not to be punny) all over my seed catalogs this year. i wonder whether they're mainstreamed for small-space gardening? I'm guessing the fabric's breathability is a big plus for things like tomatoes and potatoes...

We found a platform storage bed at World Market online for less than $500. Pretty understated, and you have to put it together yourself, but it has nice big drawers and it's better quality than Ikea.

At our house we have "Tapas" = crackers, cheese, olives, cherry tomatoes...wine... whatever else is lying around.

Also: Individually-frozen boneless chicken breasts cook really fast on the stovetop. You don't even have to thaw them - just place a couple in the pan, turn on the heat, throw in whatever else you have on hand (olives, lemon, tomatoes, green beans...) and call it dinner. (Couscous is a side we add sometimes - boil water & let sit 5 mins.) Trader's sells individually frozen breasts, but we don't have a Trader's where we are - so generally buy raw, then wrap&freeze them ourselves to keep on hand...

What about a furniture moving blanket? Between a non-skid pad and the rug itself, it wouldn't likely damage the rug's delicate fibers - but I'm no expert. A quick Google search returns several inexpensive sources...

I know I'd throw something hard at just the right angle: shatter! (I've done it twice with wine glasses just this week.)

Porch lights are common where I live. Safety first! (I assume.)

You've heard of guerilla gardeners who plant vegetables along highways and wildflowers in abandoned lots? A band of guerilla energy savers recently went around replacing traditional porch light bulbs with CFL bulbs in my neighborhood and others nearby - whether people wanted them or not.

We're doing it too! Urban style - on our front porch. Rather bold of us, since we're new to the neighborhood, city, and state, not to mention beekeeping itself. And, we're renting. ooops.

The bees we're working are gentle - not nearly as aggressive as wasps or yellowjackets, which are far more dangerous and sting-ish. We're doing it out of curiosity, and for the sweet, sweet honey - partly, in hopes that it will lessen seasonal allergies (local honey, they say, is a remedy.) Our neighbors think it's cool, and so does the FedEx guy. Our mailman is scared of us now, though...

I have one. Shaped like a two-headed goose. A hand-me-down (was told it was made by Grandpa - never doubted this, but until today I'd never seen others, either.) Didn't realize it was a trivet... this is potentially more useful? Right now it never sees the light of day. (Too tipsy as a basket.)

I live in a bungalow with a similar entry room. I also have not figured this out entirely, but in case it sparks any thoughts: what we did, essentially, was divide the room into two separate spaces defined by a "hall" - one long carpet -leading to the dining room.

The area directly in front of the fireplace is our "library" with a small funky table and two chairs (we sometimes use this as a breakfast nook too.) The opposite end of the room is our living room, with sofa and coffee table facing two chairs (which are against the front door wall.) I'm envious of your cabinetry around the fireplace - perfect library shelving!
