I like the live-edge table, but how did you ever find it at that miya shoji website? Awful, awful web design. Home Source (http://www.homesourcetx.com/) has identical tables for a tiny fraction of the price that I'm sure MS is asking. [No, I'm not connected with them in any way and their website is only marginally better.]

I would like to cover a wall like this in clocks of all shapes and sizes. If you've ever been in a clock shop, you know how the symphony of ticks & tocks creates a water-like white noise that can disguise outside noise. And for fun, keep your guests guessing by only setting ONE to the correct time, but don't tell them which one.

Another idea I had recently was to cover a wall in distressed, salvaged doors. Old wood has a very soothing effect to me and using architectural salvage is very green. If you find some with glass panels (missing or not, the glass doesn't matter) you can put a picture of an outdoor scene behind it. Put different scenes next to each other (Taj Mahal through one door, the pyramids through another, etc) and pretend they're your portals to the world. Obviously, leave the knobs on the inside of the door and you can have a lot of fun with antique hardware.

I built my own sawhorse desk using Ikea's Vika Artur legs and a slab door from Home Depot. Slab doors come in 24, 26, 30, 32, and 36-inch depths, but you'll need to buy a solid core door if you want to cut it down from the 80-inch length. I was fine with the length, so I bought a hollow-core door which is much easier to move around.

I also made a monitor stand out of 2 sets of Knuff magazine filing boxes and an Ekby shelf. Everything was purchased unfinished, so I finished it all the same. I should submit photos.

Go big, but do it differently instead of a boring, old-fashioned linear arrangement. Consider hanging them in an inverted-L with two-across and one-down. Then put a big lamp on the left side (photographer's left) table where the "missing fourth" picture would normally be. Having a 10-foot ceiling allows you to take advantage of the extra space, rather than having empty horizontal strips of wall above and below the artwork.

I second OJanet's suggestion of a ceiling fan. I think if you did any of the quirky/trendy stuff suggested (not naming names, they're not all quirky) you'll get tired of that too. There are many, many different fan/lighting combinations and as a bonus it'll probably help with your utility bill.

@textiles --
"When it is uncomfortable shouldn't be hard for anyone with any sense to figure out."

Uncomfortable doesn't happen in one night. It's a slow process that accumulates over years or decades. How long depends on both the bed and the person(s) sleeping in it. It's a little presumptuous of you to think that people wake up in the morning, recognize that their bed is uncomfortable, and then consciously choose not to do anything about it.

I'd go with an indoor fountain/pond, complete with goldfish. The burbling water sounds can be soothing.

What about the 3rd pic (teal with letters, stars, alligator on the wall) is romantic? Not criticizing, I honestly don't understand. Is the bed supposed to be the purple pad on the right? Is that a quilt or a rug in the middle? Please explain. Thanks.

First thing to know is what zone you're in, which we don't. Second, as others mentioned, is knowing what light is available. Can't make plant recommendations (especially cannot just blindly recommend a Japanese Maple as one commenter did!) without those 2 bits of info.

But I think those that recommended trellises or espalier to soften the wall are on the right track. Pulling up the grass is probably in your best interests as well. It's too small of an area to really be a lawn, and they're not "green" anyway. Just follow your inspiration: A few pots on the ground, but mostly wall & overhead hangings.

@MCB in MD-
Good tip. I overlooked that it was the hardware. A cheap, dollar-store saucepan on the stovetop sounds like it would work too.

Every hinged door or cabinet in my home has 30 years of layer upon layer of paint. Unfortunately, they're cheap brass underneath, so I'm replacing them with nickel anyway.

Even if you miss the flower carpet, make plans to see the Grote Markt in Brussels. It is such a beautiful, civilized, and friendly city in a wonderful country of lovely small towns and villages. The "low countries" are high on my list of places to which to return.

Divorced man here. The NYTimes article just seems to be describing rich people problems. I don't need design help, I need someone to pay for it. Not sure I agree with all the assumptions about divorced people that seem to be floating around though.
