reactions to this item have sparked some self-reflection. i must admit: a lot of times i can be a bitchy little naysayer, always finding the potential problems or pointing out flaws. but this is beautiful! what a wonderful job! and so why would anyone feel compelled to critique the transformation of space from something not only ugly but also inefficient to something beautiful, practical, and well-designed (in terms of usage)? so um, i think you'll be fine in terms of elbow space. i don't flail about wildly when i'm decoupaging or making fine cuts with an xacto knife--do you? anyways, lovely lovely work. would you mid sharing how you measured and cut the tabletop and shelves to get them to fit so neatly? the thing about the plywood/batting/fabric option is, how do you mount it to the wall? (doesn't it get heavy, esp if you use thick plywood?) i've been thinking about making a headboard for a while now, and that's the most popular option, but i've never been eager to drill big ol screws into my bedrm wall. the upside of this canvas option, for me, is that each section is pretty lightweight, so simple nails would seem to work just fine. A16's grilled fava beans are delish and one time, facing a glut of CSA green beans, i decided to try a swap. and indeed, it was glorious! now green beans are one of my favorite veggies, and i look forward to the bagfuls we receive. uh, elvedon, if you'll read my original post i said that it's OVERconsumption i have a problem with. uh, yeah, i think OVERconsumption is bad. not simple "consumption" which, by virtue of entanglement with free market capitalism, pretty much none of us can escape. so uh, go back and read my comment. please. AT, thanks for the Aubuchon suggestion, but a quick glance at their site confirms my suspicion that contact paper is irredeemably fugly. :( this site always points me towards lovely stationary/gift wrap sites. i want to use some of that as contact paper! but i also want it to hang vertically. is there no simple, not-too-sticky adhesive one can make at home? or am i doomed to using scotch tape on the backside? i've made the strawberry cream pie twice in rapid succession--and loved every luscious bit of it (as have my partner and various dinner/vacationing guests)! the second time, i made the pie in a springform pan, and the presentation was even more impressive! we just use the ikea babord shoe racks, both in our entryway and in my closet. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/68270509 we haven't painted or otherwise spruced ours up, so they're nothing spectacular. but they're effective--and cheap! and if one manages to keep all the shoes neatly lined up, they form a not unpleasing visual display of their own... i've been doing this for a while too. (validation! woo hoo! :) if you want to make sure the bottom edges don't curl up, just flatten your poster out using some heavy--and clean--books. after a few days underneath my OED, my posters are flat and ready to be hung with nary a curl in sight.
