its nice to see this in contrast to other homes in Shaw. the modern interior in such an old neighborhood is pretty refreshing.

i guess white brick is better than white drywall, but i far prefer unpainted, though sealed, brick. i think its a great look.

i've created faux bricks for clients and i think it turns out pretty nice.
here's one wall i did:

its possible to get it pretty naturalistic using just matte paint and a texture medium.

i've been in a lot of art studios/ shops/ creative spaces.
the most pro and dedicated ones are always organized.

maybe not -pristine- but definitely organized.
the myth of the crazy disorganized artist is a myth and only represents the minority of those that attain any measure of success.

i'd put them on steel display shelves. one small shelf for each piece.

this is definitely a trend in the houses i've been working in around dc metro in the last handful of years.
but like all trends, there are countless people who just happen to already be that way. this one particularly jives with those of us that like and gravitate toward really creative and personal spaces, but dont have much money.

i refer to it as urban bohemian. but lots of terms seem to work. "authentic" will sell it, but what "authentic" is i'll never know. whatever, its just marketing.

unless you live there part time or paint seasonally, which would be wonderful, don't base your colors on the weather.

generally speaking, cool colors recede, warm colors approach.
often a sky blue room feels bigger than a white room.

its hard for me to suggest colors to someone i haven't met, but a nice technique for walls that actually makes a place feel bigger is colorwashing or glazing.

i'm a huge fan of polished concrete, but that basement looks pretty sweet.

i second LoriSF in stencils! i love decoratively painted floors.
a lot can be done with paint on floors far less expensively than with many of the materials typically used.

using wood isnt all that original in a bike. the first bikes were wood. but its one of the best uses of bamboo i've seen.
while i dont think i'd go downhill singletracking on a wooden frame, it'd be fine for riding around the city, or on normal trails, like the c&o.

this one has a fun design:

i'm not personally a fan of the interior design but the architecture is fantastic.
i love seeing how people adapt or modernize old homes.

i'm in bloomingdale dc and i have a car.

my professional involves transporting lots of stuff fairly often. and often driving out to the metro-less burbs.

otherwise, i try not to drive. the bus/train goes everywhere i generally want to go. plus i walk a lot.

my wife hasn't driven at all in her 10 years in dc.

Victoria in DC,
ha! i ride the 90's all the time.
yeah. novel worthy. especially in the middle of the day.

Ji,
yeah. no kids here. and my hood has crappy schools, so the wife and i would seriously consider a charter school.
i wouldn't think that would be a problem in tenleytown though.
