Wow - made this tonight and the results were divine!!! Used 2 cups minus 2 tbsp all purpose flour bc had no cake flour; and did the lemon/ milk sub for the buttermilk. They were fabulous. Last step - just added the milk to the food processor before dumping everything onto the counter. Highly recommend to others. Guests were happy. :) Would be excellent for breakfast. You also get calcium from bones in small oily fish, such as mackerel and sardines; almonds; leafy green vegetables; and broth/stocks. Also, like others have said, this is not an 'exclusive list of foods to eat' but foods to incorporate into your diet X times per week. That said, studies have shown that Asian populations who traditionally eat little to no dairy have less osteoporosis than Americans who consume a plentiful amount of dairy. I made this but not the sauces as it is already more white flour/sugar/dairy/etc than is normally consumed in my house. It was a TOTAL HIT with my family and all are begging for me to make again. They were gone within 2 hours. Some notes - I didn't have a bundt pan so I made this modified version in a muffin pan http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/12/monkey-muffins/ - it is done baking in 15 minutes and there is no dipping and rolling (also your house will smell wonderful). There was enough dough for 24 'muffins' but I saved half of it for later. Also: added chopped pecans and a TINY bit of maple syrup to the top. A cursory look on the internet reveals that it is actually quite difficult to find a from-scratch recipe for this dough so thank you so much!! Yuck, dough conditioners. Made this this morning! Just estimated for butter and sugar mix...needed additional 5 minutes in oven. At 20 minutes was finished but very eggy tasting and a little too moist-- at 25 minutes it had the right eggy crepe consistency. It was easy and fast. Served with maple syrup cause here in Canada that is how we do. I like it better than normal pancakes because it doesn't make you brain dead - there's actually a lot of protein in there. I can see you could make this much fancier too by adding a spirit (rum? bourbon?) to the initial caramelization of the apples, and serve with a flavoured cream....(maple/whiskey creme anglais?) or icecream for dessert. Also, @stationeryfiend, even though the author used Mazen's name umpteen times, you still got it wrong!! It's MazEn, not MazAn. So....maybe she could use it a couple more times. ;-) Mazen's Tailored Toronto Townhouse House Tour |

Leslieville represent!!! This house is so gorgeous...high ceilings, sigh. Love the wall treatment in the bedroom. I don't think it's boring, I think it's soothing. I also went for ikea's butcherblock counters (very affordable) ...but I like them very much paired with the black cabinetry. Mazen's Tailored Toronto Townhouse House Tour |

Love it, thank you. I am also not a fan of meat substitutes. I am lactose and soy intolerant and although I love the freshness and wholesomeness of a lot of vegan cooking, there are also a lot of things that qualify as vegan that I don't particularly find nourishing...sugar, french fries, pasta, etc and sooo often there is some kind of soy product serving to substitute for dairy or meat...I completely get what Sara Kate is saying and bookmarked this page for cooking something great in the future! I made my own out of desperation once when we were drunkenly eating fries in the middle of the night and ran out completely. There may have been a snowstorm as well. Whatever it was, the situation was desperate and I love my ketchup (Heinz, only Heinz). Strangely enough the stuff I DID make using a can of tomato paste was delicious and very close to the real deal. Since then however I have only been tempted to make from scratch for reasons of health. You have inspired me to try again however. Ketchup Head-to-Head: Homemade or Heinz? |

Lots of great comments here esp. in regards to the off-putting Orientalist tone of the letter. Thankfully there are Indian people reading this and correcting generalizations. And does anyone else find it odd that the best DIY was watching someone else do it? I don't object to the decorating because everyone is entitled to their taste but maybe the editors could exercise a little judgement over what gets published here. Wow. Quite a masculine space...I think my bf would also have tool things in place of regular furniture if I acquiesced. I was blown away by the pulley-elevator. Made a lovely soup tonight - curried lentils with diced sweet potato & spinach. Light base of coconut milk, chicken stock and water. Main spices: coriander, tumeric, cumin, saffron, cayenne, cilantro. Simmer onion in your fat of choice. Add spices in seeds. Add liquids and lentils. When lentils are soft, puree. Add cubed sweet potato. At the very end add spinach & cilantro, salt/fish sauce, black pepper, lemon juice to taste. Fragrant, warming, healthy, delicious. 8 Soups to Fill You Up Without Weighing You Down | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

The apartment itself is stunning...I agree with posters that the style of the interior feels forced and is competing with more than complementing the fabulous shell. The scale and placement of the furnishings is good and I'm not bothered by all the lucite but why all the pattern? Dots and peeping faces and faux baroque-y modern things on upholstery and cushions and rugs...it just ends up looking very cheap. That kind of "busy" uber-decorated look seems to work better where there isn't so much architectural detail. There's so much to work with (or against) here - the wood paneling, the moldings, the leather built in seats and the amazing lighting fixtures. And what is up with the xmas lights? Is that seasonal? It looks like the tenant was constrained by some rules (if you see the craigslist listing) - 70% of floor space must be covered by carpeting and it looks like the moose is there to stay. I thought the use of carpeting throughout was also a bit weird so that explains that. I would have loved to see this place with simple, modern, luxe furnishings. Oh well.
