@vintagejenta -yes! I've gone as far as to write the expiration date of my baking powder in a bold color on the calendar in our kitchen, because even though I bake quite often, I rarely think to check the date on my baking powder...

@strundblade - I used to live in Denver and walked to Marzyck's from my apartment quite often; I loved to take friends there when they would visit, just for the sandwiches! I miss all of the places you mentioned...
@dLewsey - I don't live in Denver now...'used to, but we now live in a different area of the country. I loved to shop at the farmers' market within a ten-minute bike ride from my apartment...enjoy the city for me!

...having lived in Europe and Asia, then Denver when I finally moved back to the States, I loved small-but-plentiful markets within walking distance (just blocks or a few miles) from my home, which, looking back, makes me feel like I was living a spoiled life. I now live in an area where there are no small markets, the nearest farmers' market is more than a half-hour drive away, on the highway (the couple of months in the summer they're open), there are no butcher or specialty shops and our 'best grocery store' option is a W-Mart... *le sigh* I hope this move is only temporary...but we're doing what we can to appreciate what we do have (despite the tone of my comment).

In Defense of the Seven-Layer Salad

I've never had a seven-layer salad (I don't care much for mayo-based 'salads') but I really like the 'seven-layer' dip, with refried beans, cheese, green chiles, tomato, black olives, sour cream and green onions...

I just watched an episode (yesterday...?) of Gourmet's Adventures with Ruth where they foraged for fiddleheads with Jon Rowley in Washington State, near Seattle...they cooked them up on the beach, with fresh oysters + clams.

What Does Your Kitchen Say About You?

...have you tried foodblogsearch.com ? I just searched for 'roast goose' and quite a few recipes came up; I've wanted to roast a goose for Christmas for years, but the specimens in the freezer cases in the little towns we've lived in always look SO pathetic...maybe we can afford to buy a lovely goose online or from a local farm this year?

I agree with Displaynamehasalreadybeentaken -it's been my experience that while in mourning, the last thing I usually think to do or want to do is eat, though I know I should, but taking care of her child is most likely an automatic priority, and easy is best... Maybe, if you two know each other well enough, you could offer to take her toddler to lunch and a park or the library, to give her some time to herself, but also to help her know that her little one is being taken care of, in this overwhelming time...?

I just had the photo of her kneading bread in front of the window framed and will hang it next to the window we walk by as we enter the kitchen in our new house -the hubs gave me the photo for Christmas, after I saw the post about the collection last year... Love it!!

I feel like such a judgmental jerk when friends or family don't clean up after a party -esp when we're spending the night with the hubs' family and I'm the first one up in the morning, but it's such a wretched feeling to walk into a disgusting, food-covered kitchen, SO I usually tackle things after everyone else has gone to bed...we clean everything in our house before relaxing at the end of the night, unless it's something that needs to soak, and the trash has to be emptied and taken out!

I won't eat Chicken Piccata if capers aren't involved...they're also lovely in a dill cream sauce, over tilapia or other firm fish. Mmmmm...I always have a bottle in our pantry.

I want to sit in the second kitchen with a cuppa tea...gorgeous! I can't remember ever cooking in a kitchen with wallpaper, but I imagine if the wallpaper wasn't used as a back-splash in 'danger zones' or could be cleaned easily (love me some Mrs. Meyers spray), I wouldn't mind the chance for interesting and beautiful color...

Lisatee - I never travel without my stash of PG Tips! I bring a few of the pyramid bags with me whenever I know I'll be away from home, even just an overnight trip...

'PG Tips black tea. This is my everyday tea and what I reach for first thing in the morning.'

Digsapony -Can I come over...?! *sweet silly smile* I'll be cooking up a batch of chicken alfredo tonight, made with Greek yogurt and chicken broth, instead of cream/butter -it's delicious and works well with whole grain pasta...we'll also have a proper breakfast tomorrow, eggs and thick slices of bacon, with toast to dip in our yolks.

I usually do all of my mixing with a whisk or cream butter and sugar for most recipes with a fork, but I received a stand mixer as well, in October, and am getting used to remembering I have it to help out; I used the dough hook to knead a batch of bread a few days ago, which I'm used to doing on my tiny, floured counter (the mixer takes up pretty much that entire section of counter SO I don't leave it out, which is another reason why I forget to use it)... Like Ladidi mentioned, you can use yours for most mixing and whisking...enjoy!
