I like the before. This piece looks like a Paul McCobb piece. I have a Paul McCobb desk that I purchased a few years ago that is identical to the one I had as a kid that my parents got rid of! Of course it looks nice now, but the maple has a beautiful glow that I'm sorry you did not restore. Before & After: Laura's Refreshed Nightstand January Cure Reader Projects |

I would sand the front and give it a coat of something, but most important...I'd get a marble slab for the top. Advice for Restoring this Credenza? Good Questions |

It's a lovely homage to your mom. And by the way, did you grow up with me? Are you the missing sister I always wanted? I'm an only child. I have the same laundry folding problems! One of the ways that I honor my mother--gone almost 20 years--is making all the traditional family meals that she made--Rosh Hashonah, Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Passover. She did those meals and I do them, too, to honor her. Turning Into My Mom, One Room at a Time |

I live in a 1920s house with lots of detail--wainscotting in living room and dining room, lots of crown molding, etc. All of this had been painted many years ago and we didn't strip it when we moved into the house. Everything had been painted "coffee light" and "coffee dark." We painted all of the details white. My spouse would have liked to have painted the walls white, too. He'd always lived in a loft and that was the most comfortable for him. We ended up painting the walls colors. The living room, dining room, and breakfast room, which can all been seen as a whole, are painted three shades of increasingly deep yellow. The bedrooms and hallway are painted a Benjamin Moore color called "cement grey" and two other bedrooms are painted Benjamin Moore "clay beige." All trim in the house is white. I think it looks terrific. If everything is white none of the beautiful architectural detail shows up. Will White Walls Clash with Original Details? Good Questions |

About a year ago, when I was at the hair salon, I saw black Paul McCobb desk in a shelter magazine. That desk had been in my room when I was growing up. My parents got rid of the desk about a million years ago. In the last few years I started coveting the desk. When I saw it, I ripped the page out of the magazine . Didn't know the maker or anything about it. I started looking for it on line, and found the desk (it was pictured in a SoHo loft). I told everyone how I wanted the desk and showed the picture to anyone who would listed. I called around and found that the dealer who sold the desk to the owners of the loft. It sold for $3000, way way beyond my price range. Started looking on ebay and saw a number of Paul McCobb desks--it was made in black or maple. I'm in Brooklyn, but the desks were all over the country--the problem with ebay is distance and shipping. Then looked on New York Classified at Apartment Therapy and found the desk--in Brooklyn (!), in maple (a much better choice for my bedroom), for $500 (just the number I had in mind). And I could pick it up in the stationwagon! The Tao of Furniture: 5 Things To Do When You Covet Something |
