Also if you like natural light but want privacy you can angle your white blinds upward. Light still comes in, bounces off white ceilings and lights up the room better than when they're angled downward. It helps if your walls are lighter shades also.

A Sudden Lack Of Privacy: How Do You Handle It?

I'm on the top floor of a highrise loft space and my blinds are up most of the time and I couldn't put curtains up if I wanted. The outside wall is 100% solid stone bricks and concrete. No way I'm drilling holes that can't be patched up in a rental. There are no buildings right next to us but any peeping Tom with binoculars can probably see anything he wants. But what are the odds really. I walk around naked after a shower or my underwear when I'm getting dressed in the morning. During the day it's probably really hard to see inside anyway but either way I don't really think about it or care. If I was closer to ground level I might be a little more aware but until then...

I don't think HGTV makes people hoarders and super OCD freaks. I think the stress comes from just having too much stuff and no where to put it or no time to clean and the mess getting so out of hand that when you do find time to clean you don't no where to start and the stress levels start to rise. It's super stressful to be sharing a small apartment w/ no storage with my BF who ISN'T affected by clutter. I don't know how he just ignores the junk all over the floor but I get tired of stepping over things and digging through clothes in baskets because the closet space is at 100% capacity. I'm getting angry just writing this and I'm not at home. I've been trying to get my boyfriend on board with decluttering but he won't budge. When we moved in together I counted 21 bowls...TWENTY ONE. (I moved in with 4) Why do 2 people need 21 bowls taking up real estate in the cabinets? So while he was out one day I put half of all the dishes in a box and shoved it in what little storage we have. He didn't noticed until he realized he was washing forks every other day instead of every 2 WEEKS and he absolutely flipped out about it. I don't get it. Never will get it. But he's definitely a hoarder! Not crazy rotting pumpkin on the living room floor hoarder but like too many clothes that are not even good anymore but won't throw away etc. Sigh...there's no solution unless he's on board. It's my sanity vs. his convenience and apparently he's gonna get his way. :/

I've rented before during a move once. I had to move cities unexpectedly and didn't have a place lined up without any promise of one either so I threw my stuff in a storage, paid 3 months up front and went back for it when I found a place and the funds to haul it. I now live w/ my BF in a 700 sqft loft which isn't "small" by any means but the layout and lack of actual closet space is ridic so in hindsight maybe we should have gotten a storage. You're right, I might have enjoyed my loft more if it wasn't so cluttered. Also, I'm very much minimalist these days versus my BF who finds it necessary to hold on to his 100 tee shirts and clothes that don't even fit anymore. Not to mention all his kid's toys that he has absolutely no interest in anymore for the off-chance that he might request it one day and we not have it. I'm trying to change his mindset but at this point it's easier just to move into a more spacious place. "old dogs don't learn new tricks!" ;-)

If I could live in an urban setting with better access to pools and outdoor space I would but Kansas City doesn't have very many outdoor options so we're headed to the burbs. I'm gonna miss my loft space and walking to bars and grocery stores but I'd rather spend my time grilling out and laying out by the pool with a beer taking full advantage of what little summer we have (I'm from TX so Midwest weather blows)...sooooo until I can find the best of both worlds this is it. Not many lofts downtown have pools or outdoor spaces. Stupid!

I had a bar like this and if you have company a lot, even though there's not room to sit, guest will still congregate around the bar. Usually just leaning on it with a beer or cocktail in hand. I'd find bar stools with no back so guests can either sit facing each other or the rest of the common area during gatherings and leave the top clear and just add some flowers to either side or decorative vases, candle-scapes. Whatever your design interest. And yes, it will end up being a catch all if you don't have a designated space otherwise.

I've never been a fan of putting clothes away and ironing was like the worst punishment. And my short stint in retail during college didn't help much. The last thing I wanted to do after 30 hours of picking up after lazy, horrible customers and refolding everything they undid was come home and do my own laundry. But thanks to retail I discovered the ...wait for it...steamer! Suddenly I had a reason not to care that my clothes stay in the laundry basket or couch, chair, bed until I wore it. I could steam it in less than 5 mins and be out the door.

My grandmother is Mexican and her house was/is surrounded by waterbags, jugs of "holy water" plus a plethora of phony Mexican folk tales. The end result was her house looked like crap and since we lived in south Texas (a heaven for bugs and giant mosquitos) she also had fly shit everywhere. Just saying....doesn't work.

I totally agree with this. I moved from Texas where I have plenty of friends to Kansas City where I knew 3 people before moving. And though they're are still my friends ... that's it. That's all I have and life can get really boring bc the less friends you have the harder it is to get enough people together to actually go out and do something fun. It's also a lot harder to get the friends you DO have to commit to doing stuff bc it seems like all anyone wants to do is sit at home alone or with their pets which is sad because at 27 I don't think I"m at all old but my lack of a social life tells me otherwise. I've also found that as you "grow" with a group of friends it's hard to penetrate that circle. In college the more the merrier. Hey Friend meet Friend and you two be Friends because I want all my friends to be friends. But in your late 20s if you didn't go to college with that group, or highschool, or if you weren't married into the group...hell if you ever get an invite even if you do know someone already in the circle. I don't even have co-workers to hang out with. Just me and my two married bosses in a small office. So where/how do you make friends as an adult?!

I agree w/ the flavor and cost. However, I think think the cost of the capsules are a lot less than the cost of a Starbucks latte 5 days a week AND considering it would cost a whole lot more for an espresso machine that wouldn't poop out on me in 6 months time like my cheapo Target one did...this seemed like an okay deal. I realize too that fresh ground coffee would taste a whole lot better but at the same time the Nespresso capsules could taste a whole lot worse. It IS way better than those yucky Kurigs. Blugh! and PS you can recycle the capsules at Sur la Table but I think several people have mentioned this already. :) Any time I want fresh, regular cafe I have my trusty $10.00 5-cup drip machine ready to go as well.

Rent is the biggest sham ever! Seriously all rent should be controlled. I really don't think renting 600 sqft that was built in 1960 and hasn't been updated since is worth the price these people charge (in any city)! "You want how much for that piece of junk in a homicidal neighborhood??" I don't think so! And where are consumer rights in apartment rentals...renters are pretty much ripped a new one in fees and rent increases because they know you can't get out of the lease until it's up. Why are they charging pet deposit AND rent? Do you charge rent / person? No, why does the dog have to pay rent? It's a win-win for apartment management companies. I hate all the bs of being a renter but in this economy and the fact that I'm under 30 and graduated at the height of the recession = I will never own a home. Totally went on a tangent but "rent control" made me think about how renting is all highway robbery!

My recycle company doesn't except plastic bags so I stopped getting them...I ask only for paper which I can use to put recyclables in AND the only way they'll accept shredded paper.

I had to have "approval" of the color before painting and I assumed they wouldn't let me paint the dark chocolate color I wanted so I lied and pointed to a light grey swatch so they'd approve.

Sounds to me like your neighbors just need to get over it! They moved in downstairs knowing very well that SOMEONE would be living upstairs and noise from footsteps in an older home is just a given. You've been considerate from what it seems. Change your number, and tell them it's out of your hands. If they have a problem, THEY can move. No point walking on eggshells sacrificing your happiness for theirs.

I agree, decluttering can do wonders. The magnets on the fridge and stuff on top of fridge and counter... hide it and it won't look so bad.

I'm constantly reminded why I dislike this entire season when I go to the mall or am just driving anywhere near a shopping center. People are rude, pushy, mean, selfish, drive like idiots, overuse their stupid horns for no reason etc. Then I'm like "oh yeah, I remember." So I just avoid all that by shopping online or shopping super early in the day.
