make sure to do this in a well-ventilated space. when i did this it started to really stink up the kitchen and i'm sure the fumes weren't all that good for me to breathe in.

I haven't planted it yet, but I've been reading that clover is a hardy, green ground cover that won't turn brown when dogs pee on it. You might also want to consider gravel - Dwell magazine had an article a few months ago that went over different gravel options.
