Keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide around in case you need to induce vomiting. Saved my dogs from some very well-hidden (from me) rat poison that a previous tenant left behind.

My grandma LOVES the double strength vanilla extract. Won't use anything else.

I have dachshunds and they are awesome. Both of mine are purebreds but have almost opposite personalities, so definitely pay attention to the temperament of any dogs you meet, regardless of their breed.

Dachshunds are happy in small apartments but like any dog can turn into a terror with inconsistent or lack of training. I think that because small dogs are adorable and easily to physically restrain, it is tempting for owners to put in a half-hearted effort at training. Thus the dogs don't learn to be quiet or stay or perform other extremely basic commands and instead are obnoxious yappy little twerps. Just saying, little dogs can be great but they have to be trained too.

So cute, but I can't get over the monitor. Why? Why is it up there? there's no way it can be used that way, but if it's not meant to be used without moving it to the table, why are the keyboard and mouse out? Sorry, a little ocd, but I really can't figure it out. Otherwise I love this entry!

Tobacco will stain through new paint, so whatever you pick make sure you get the walls cleaned first (assuming you are trying to cover tobacco stains).

Kevin says, "You've got your Crate and Barrel and your CB2, right? I'd describe my style as CB1.5."

CB1.5 = the uninspired side of Ikea.

Put me firmly on the naysayer list. If I have a "small" budget of $5000 to blow on my first place (I assume we are talking about owning, not renting), I assure you it will not be this bad, even at 4 weeks. Especially if I have less than 1000 sq ft to tackle.

I don't know if I'm supposed to be more disappointed with the designer or the homeowner, but yeah, bland and uninspired is right.

Yeah, the recent AT good question about this makes me scream "Don't do it!" You know where you can find a *nearly* new cheaper sleeper of much higher quality? Craigslist.

They look beautiful, but that shelving looks so rickety and uneven I get nervous for crashing vases.

Most of my suggestions have been mentioned in one form or another already, but they are worth repeating:
The puppy should be in the crate unless someone is physically watching her. Eyeballs focused solely on the pup, not washing dishes and keeping an eye on her. Someone else mentioned that she shouldn't associate the crate with you leaving. They're right.

It might help to have the crate near you (or your bed, whatever) or to put a piece of clothing (something you don't mind being destroyed) in the crate with her. If it is too big and carpets the crate, she will be able to pee on it and push it out of the way.

I definitely recommend feeding her in it or even just giving her treats in the kennel. Get a Kong toy and some peanut butter. I don't know how big her snout is, but mine go crazy over an empty jar of peanut butter or jelly.

I know it's ridiculously hard, but don't reward the shrieking by giving her your attention or talking to her and trying to calm her down or letting her out (I mean letting her out to play. If you respond to her whining by taking her out to pee and nothing else, that's great). It reinforces the whining. I hate this part of puppy training, but they get over it if you make them.

Good luck! Keep us updated.

The bathroom is actually a pretty bad place to keep your medicine, since the humidity and heat can effect pills. The kitchen is not much better, for the same reasons.

I love it!

The fact that the decoupaged table is the smaller of two nesting tables is a nice touch, since the busyness of the postage stamps can peek out but not overwhelm the overall effect — like the contrasting patterned lining in a raincoat.
I completely agree.
