You could also look for an upholstery class in your area. Sometimes you can bring your piece and fabric and use their equipment, receiving help along the way.

I have wood paneling just like in the first picture in my daylight basement and I love it. I agree that the thin, cheap stuff is horrible, but the real wood paneling adds lovely warmth and texture. I have mostly MCM furniture down there and I think it really works.

I found a great looking bedspread from the 60s (made in Italy!) at a garage sale and put it over my couch. I like it.
