My friends and I used ownersdirect.co.uk to rent a villa on the Turkish coast last summer and had a great experience using it. The perks of using home rental include but certainly aren't limited to:

1) Cost: with the six of us renting the villa, we each paid less than $300 for an entire week - you can't go wrong with that!
2) It was nice having a home base that, well, felt like home. Being able to cook for ourselves some days, instead of having to eat out for every meal, which again ties into the cost - it's just cheaper all around. Also being able to comfortably lounge around if we didn't feel like heading into town or didn't have any specific plans set for the day.
3) When renting a home abroad, it gives you a sense of how the locals live and thus, I think, makes your travel experience that much richer.

I haven't tried VBRO yet, nor have I heard of AirBNB, but I'll definitely look into giving them a try. Another option, which I'll be trying this summer on a trip abroad is farmstays.

For dealing with elbows on the table at meals, our family had a little phrase: "Mabel, Mabel, keep your elbows off the table." After time, if one of us siblings caught another with elbows on the table, we would call each other out by just saying "Mabel."

I'm searching for apartments out of state as well, moving from New England to the Pacific Northwest.

I've perused sites like forrent.com, rent.com, apartmentsearch.com, and apartmentguide.com.

It also helps to network. You may have friends or family that know people who live in the area you're moving to. Maybe they'll be kind enough and send and email out on your behalf.

Personally, I would love to hear of any apartment websites geared towards the PNW.

@seawhitney - Can I ask what moving company you decided to go with and your cost estimate? I'm planning to move next fall from Boston to the west coast as well and I'm trying to figure out what my best options are.

I'll probably end up going with moving cube...which I think will be more cost effective and less stressful than driving both my car and a Uhaul.
