At age 9 i was home alone (dont remember why), hungry and wanted pancakes but did not know HOW but was hungy enough to risk it.... then it dawned on me the box had instructions on the back so in fact I COULD made them .... about a month later i figured the instruction on the back of the boxes were recipes and if i can follow one i can follow the other... so i could use the old recipe book and make my own meal without having to wait for my mom to get back or up and do it for me. (and the result would be edible)

Around this time my mom decided to "teach" me for security sake after she discovered i had no idea how to properly grab a knife, or any idea of how to dice a tomato or not to mix hot oil and water but i would try to cook eitherway.

Bonus: At almost 50 my dad decided to learn to cook and asked me how to make pancakes...i pointed out the instructions on the back of the box... he could not believe that was it.

My mom's solution:
keept all my pencils colors, crayons, sharpies, pencils etc in a tool box since i was 7... easy to see and to put away. I know its not "pretty", but kids like to carry colors around (my nieces do..) and it was (and is) usefull.

While on a tour I tripped and broke my glasses, i realized this trick but back then i had a film camara that could zoom in (aka: no digital screen) and had to hold the camara to my eyes.
This tip is very usefull but it gets very annoying after a while.

my parents use the stove to heat the kitchen/dining room. Because the stove was already on i took to cooking chicken stock, always having hot water for tea and making jams..... now i learn that the humidity of making soups helped too....¡ (keep the kitchen window open just a tiny bit to prevent CO2 headaches and keep a timer)

But my best advise is to wear leggins under your jeans and a nice thermal undershirt and a sweater or two (layes....layers.). A hat that covers your ears is also good.

How To...Stay Warm at Home without Much Heat

Get up ¡ if you cant sleep because your brain is haywire get up and walk around, sit down and write your to-do-list ,take a bath to get that clean-and-comfy feeling or change your linens...... Then go back to bed and tell yourself a story ( keep it simple and silly---- you dont want nightmares) or listen to your own heartbeat. (if you still cant fall asleep at least your mind will go blank and you will rest....somewhat)

Keep a sleep mask and earplugs in your night stand for when light or noise are the problem, and vic for when a stuffy nose is AND (in my personal case) bug repelent in summer.

A glass of water and "no clock or mirrows visible from the bed" are also must for me, nothing more frustating that not being able to sleep and see your clock blink 3:15 am...or almost falling alseep and see the shadow of your curtain move in the mirrow and startle yourself awake.

my own trick is to use themes: city zip codes (the one you dream to visit) , birthdays of celebrities or places from books.... so a good password could be your favorite quote on a book or a bible versicule, for example "HarryPotter3107" (the character birthday) o "Dumasp145" ("p" for page).... make the page folding the corner, no one will know.

My meal planning is rarely "plan out", depends on things in the fridge, the ability to box it for lunch and my mood (15min cooking, 2 hrs cooking...... "ceral today" kinda moods)
If i do crave a particular dish it involves a shooping trip a day in advance.

Not an iphone or even android story.... i left the cell in the floor charging and went to sleep, a pipe in the bathroom broke and because the floor on my room is unlevel i woke up to my cell (and whole room) 2in deep in water..... the funny thing is, the cell was fully charged and keept on working till the battery died 2 days later.

btw ....The only other victim of the flood was a book.... and myself, having to clean (and wake up to barefoot) that much water in december.

more easy.... if head injury and lots of blood hold any towel to their heads and KEEP IT THERE (the kid or fuzzy adult wont see the blood, but the one helping will).... using a dark washcloth hides the wound and dont let other people (parents) help asses if a trip to the hospital is necesary.

Teach kids what kinds of injuries are necesary to tell an adult about and which ones are not big deal. Dont panic but also dont downplay injuries.

I traveled alone at age 15, in a tour desinged for 15-16 year old....24 teenagers and 5 adults "in charge" in an europe tour for a month It was pretty fun and i really learned a lot about caring for myself, my things and my money. Part of the preparations were a legal document , made in a notary , that i indeed had permission from my parents to travel alone. Funny enough, not once (in going trough 12 borders) was i asked for said permit or my passport (only switzerland's border was my group asked for documents, upon seeing the bag with the 30-odd passport we were given the "go" without further questions)... but i had to show them upon returning

if you store something (linens or clothes) under the matress chances are you are not using that for a while, so do not bother with zipper bags, just wash it before using.

I store my wool coat and winter blankets under my matress, but it stays there for 8 months at a time..... even if inside a bag i NEED to wash it, so i just dont bother with the bags.

For loose change i either go to the bank or a small store, they usually apreaciate the coins and my bank has a "day" a week for loose coins. As i dont live in the USA the idea of collecting pennies is strange, when on holiday i always end up giving all small coins (pennies, five cents and dimes) to charity boxes.
When I collect coins, i usually commit to a kind of coin that can quicly amount to someting but still not affect my budget. (the equivalent in USA will be 50 cents and dollar coins i guess)

if i order a 6 dollar drink i will leave 2 dollars, if i order a 20 dollar drink you still get 2 dollars, i dont usually calculate "15% tip", just what feels right like from:

1- how well mixed
2. how quick
3. did i like you? (as a person)
4. how much money i have on hand i'm willing to leave/tip without having to change a bill.
&. if food/drink where really bad, or the waiter was a jerk....No Tip.

I will like to post a question to all readers,: How do you go about tips at a wedding and that sort of event? do you tip at all? at start or finish? how much is apropiate?

I glued the cap of a soda pastlic bottle, cut a inch long slit near the top and I had a "piggy bank" that i could not cheat, and was virtually free AND invisible to most. (chose a tinted bottle)

Under my mattres i store either winter coats, posters or tablecloths....

keep a dry-easer marker in your bathroom so you can write reminders in your mirrow (or tabs in what have you weared in the week)....

those silicon "do not eat" bags in the medicine box or a few tablespoons of baking soda in an organza bag (the one they give out at weddings with mints) works tha same for moisture...

i keep needles, thread and safetypins in a jewerly box.. and have other for bobby pins...

@JOAN IN SB To make it "lemon", mix in the blender a small can of condensed milk, 180 grams of cream chesse and the juice of 8 lemons (not limes)... layer this and the cookies, let in the fridge at leats 8 hours or 3 in the frezeer if you are in a hurry.

I guess you could use a mix of whipped cream and lemon curd (instead of the condenced milk, cream chesse and lemon juice), but that would not be absorved by the cookies as well or get the same creamy almost chesse like texture... also i dont particulare care for lemon curd, i find it to acidic..

Other summer-no-bake easy dessert is to press the cookies to the bottom to make a crust, then blend 5-6 guavas (in spanish they are called guayabas) with a can of condensed milk, 180 grams block of cream chesse and a little gelatin disolved in water... and pour over the crust. It sets as a pie.

I put my bed under the window.... i add pillows in the day (so i can lean against the corner or wall) so it becomes my writting, reading, watching tv or laptop nook. In winter my bed goes back to the center of the room ( a more common (and warm) place for it to be)
