I felt grown up the first time I hired movers to lug my stuff (including many, many boxes of books) to a new apartment, rather than trying yet again to bribe my friends with pizza and beer.

Such a fabulous space! Love your style, craftiness, animals. And the hinged shelf that covers the AC unit is brilliant. I'm inspired!

Gorgeous! I have a similar piece that I've been meaning to DIY, but I'm worried about the sanding part, especially on the more detailed and tighter spots (such as the drawer pulls and lattice pieces on the legs). Does anyone have tips for how to prep those areas without destroying them?

I agree with redneckmodern: I've had the Bantam for about two years now. It still looks great (I love that you can flip the bottom cushion), but in retrospect I wish I'd spent a more time in the showroom lounging on it (like, splayed out, dead to the world, bad posture lounging) because I've found the seat isn't quite deep enough when I'm slouching (sorry, Mom). I suppose that depends on your height; I'm a little over 5'7".

Chicago, Rogers Park

$1390 (mortage, insurance, taxes, condo fees) for 1bd/1ba garden-level condo, 1,000 sf, gut rehab purchased new in late 2005. Lots of character, gorgeous finishes, creature comforts (A/C, dishwasher, full-size in-unit W/D, fireplace) but no outdoor space. One block from lots of public transit (CTA & Pace), two blocks from grocery store, so I've been carless for the last two years. Sketchy neighborhood bordering the suburbs, at least 45 minutes by train/bus from family and friends.

Daydreaming about former life (before my albatross of a mortgage) in ...

Chicago, East Humboldt Park

$650 (rent) for 2bd/1ba apt on top floor, 700 sf, with dishwasher, full-size W/D, back deck. A little tired-looking overall, especially kitchen and bath, and super-small bedrooms. About 10-15 minute walk from reliable public transportation, so car wasn't a necessity but definitely made life a lot easier. Sketchy neighborhood but close to lots of restaurants, bars, activities. And five minutes from family and friends.

Buenachi: If you're looking for something that will keep your kittens from ripping your furniture to shreds, I highly recommend a corrugated cardboard scratcher. My cat is in LOVE with hers, the Cosmic Catnip Alpine Scratcher:

http://www.cosmicpet.com/scratchers.htm

Shortly after I got her from Anti-Cruelty, she took a liking to my sofa. So I just parked it in front of the spot she'd been scratching and she went to town on it. She'll often just lie on it and nap. It's the first thing she runs to in the morning and when I get home from work.

I actually get a kick out of the doped-up cats in leiderhosen on the cover, but you could easily paper over it so it's not such an eyesore. You can find the starter kit for under $20 and a 2-pack of replacement cardboard inserts for under $10.

I just saw this file storage cube ottoman on Target.com and I'm intrigued:

Has anyone seen it in person or purchased it? I'm curious about the quality. The wheels look a bit dinky, but I could probably replace them.

Elvedon, how old are the litter boxes? My cat started doing the same thing, despite having a clean, freshly scooped box every day. I finally replaced the box (she'd been using it for about a year and a half), which did the trick.
