First of all, from someone who enjoys the design, it doesn't look cheap at all, I completely agree on the Pier 1/Crate and Barrel comment.

And furthermore, blogs that do vintage/eclectic as their "style" are in just as wide of supply as the ones that use Target and Ikea. What in the world is wrong with the latter as a form of design? I don't see why you have to have vintage pieces to somehow be considered legitimate designers. Isn't that kind of excluding the people who can't actually afford the time and money for that kind of thing from having homes you would dei to consider as "good design"?

I love a good chunk of what John and Sherry do in terms of style, I WANT my house to look like theirs, and beyond that, the fantastic ing about their blog is that yes, they don't have backgrounds in the kinds of DIY that they do. But they give it a try anyway, and they do a fantastic job of documenting their experiments, even when they don't succeed! Meanwhile gaining experience with every project to have more skills in the future. The point is thay there are many things they make feel attainable to a lot of us normal every day people with low budgets and small amounts of DIY knowledge.

I'm confused here... what exactly was the kitchen "supposed" to look like, since the commenters all have their panties in a knot?

I think the result is gorgeous. And I really don't think it would bother me to have a Victorian exterior with a modern interior. In fact I think I'd quite like it. And I'm going to guess that there are other people out there like me and the owners of this house, who would buy the house BECAUSE it has that specific pairing - outdoor with old character, modern day sleek interior! (I also really love the bath/shower combo, I want to try it!)

I don't understand why there are so many "rules" involved in what people do with their living spaces and their furniture that AH commenters seem to demand adherence to. Different tastes is one thing, but demanding that people must do one thing or another just seems... unnecessary. And stupid. You're just wasting your breath, honestly, because all you're going to accomplish is that either A) the person featured in the post will ignore you or B) they will feel bad about their work because all people can do is trash talk it. Seriously, I've barely seen any USEFUL critique here - like, "One source of inspiration you could use for a kitchen like this that would blend well with a Victorian design is..." Telling them they have a cookie cutter kitchen is not helpful or useful in the least. It's just petty.

Before & After: Updating a Victorian Kitchen (and Bathroom)

I admit I'm surprised at how many people didn't like this. I wasn't expecting everyone to like it, but the result seemed so eye-pleasing to me that I was taken aback at all the criticism.

It just seems so fun and happy and bright! I love the carpet, the beds, and the desk!

I am curious how heavy those beds are, as it could potentially be easy enough to unhook them and rest them on the floor for times of illness etc. But only assuming they didn't weight a ton.

I'm actually tempted to start early, myself. I, too, love stretching out the holiday season. A lot of people have been turned off to the holidays, especially Christmas, because of the over-commercialization, but for me, the things it means to me about celebration with my close friends and my family has always outweighed anything the commercial world does.

Also the cozy thing. The cons of winter (shoveling, precarious driving, etc.) pale for me in comparison to getting to sit by a fireplace, drinking a cup of cocoa, and all the wonderful decorations.

For me, the primary downside is spending the money before you have to. Granted, it can save you money on shipping (you don't have to have it shipped IMMEDIATELY so you can use the cheapest method) if you're doing online, and it can give you more time to scout for deals.

But it also starts taking money out of your budget earlier, when perhaps you could be setting aside a little bit of money at a time long in advance and then being able to use the accumulated money to get the gifts you really want to give.

All in all, though, I think that for the people who tend to get stressed by going on the gift rush late in the year, this is probably the best way.

Agreed on the "eclectic" front. Usually people aiming for that look just end up with a very disorganized and un-purposeful looking environment. Here, everything feels like it fits together well and visibly without being matchy-matchy.

And the bright colors are amazing.

Fair warning, there's now a pin on Pinterest linking back to this image and post, but the instructions under the pin involve spray paint, decals, and canvas.

Guys, the main issue here is that the person who asked for advice said THEY think the cabinets are ugly the way they are. We may not know much of their general design taste, but whether or not WE like the cabinets the way they are are or think the other parts of the kitchen are ugly... those points are kind of unneccessary and irrelevant here. They're asking for help on the -cabinets-, and they want them changed.

H: I'd say whether you stain or paint depends on whether you'd like a dark kitchen or not. Some people prefer darker, cozier spaces and some prefer bright "open" spaces. It also seems that it's dependent on how much effort you're willing to invest in the situation, since people seem to be saying that staining will be more work-intensive than painting.

I do think doing one of the two will give your kitchen a dramatic facelift, either way. One way to experiment with what will look better to you is to take some more photos of the kitchen as a whole, and go onto a website like Benjamin Moore or Home Depot (I think?) where you can upload photos and use their tools to check and see how different colors will look in your home. Then, opt for a solution based on what you like best (unless you've already ruled out staining based on effort involved.)

Hope this helps!
