If I were heading into a four-month hotel room stay, I would bring with me or buy online and have shipped to the hotel/motel:
* an electric kettle (for tea, rice noodles, couscous, instant ramen, etc.)
* a rice cooker
* a small toaster
* either a single burner hot plate (electric plug-in) or an electric skillet
* one frying pan and one 3-4 qt. pot

The electric kettle we have at work is a 1.5 liter Brentwood -- not expensive and it's great. You should be able to get a 3-6 cup rice cooker for under $20. (I am now the owner of one of the expensive "fuzzy logic" ones and what do I still use all the time? My cheapie metal one that was about $15 ten years ago, because it rules.)

This hot plate looks good and not too $$:

In 45 comments, no one has mentioned rent control?!! It makes a huge difference. If you are in SF in a rent-controlled building (generally all building constructed before June 1979), your rent cannot be raised more than a set (small) percentage each year. Also, you can be evicted only for limited, specified reasons.
