If it were that particular sweaty bloke, I'd have zero problem with it.

If you're not interested in trend or flash-factor, I'm not entirely sure how a Mac will alleviate your having to be confronted with it. Apple survives on trend and flash-factor. Apple fans don't camp in line for days to get a new product and think "Oooh, I can't WAIT to spend two-to-three times what this hardware would cost in a PC." They're thinking about the pretty chassis and how great it'll look on their salvaged wood desk next to their terrarium.

I think we're all overlooking the most important part of this story. Wright's granddaughters sold the house to a developer. What the hell did they think was going to happen? If anyone has failed to do their due diligence in this kind of situation, it's the seller. They were solely responsible for the property before it left their hands. It was their responsibility and theirs alone to not only make any potential buyer aware of the perceived importance of what they were buying, but also to go to the appropriate lengths to choose one who'd appreciate and preserve it. A lot of you are arguing that the developer should relinquish ownership of the house to enthusiasts. Again, that was the granddaughters' responsibility, not the potential buyer's. You're all letting your glands do the talking. Calm the design imperialism and look at the article rationally.

I would describe in great detail my reaction to this, but that would be inappropriate and uncouth. Instead, let me just say that -this- is why I love design. This singular moment when, after being bombarded by the same recycled aesthetic and idea for months upon months, something truly genius and beautiful makes it through.

Well damn. He has my vote. His chair would, too, if the up-dn chair weren't such a brilliant concept. Maybe these two should work together to bring the aesthetic and concept together. Can you imagine that duo? Talk about a potential for incredible furniture.

Now THAT is mid-century design I can appreciate. Finally, something I can hunt down that I'm not going to be absolutely sick of seeing in every magazine and blog post and therefore resent given enough time. I vote for more of this!

It's such a shame that the MOMA store doesn't ship to Canada. I can't find a decent Rothko print to save my life, and that vase would look killer on my carved Indian chest. Sigh. For a country that claims to be a design giant (pfft!) we certainly don't walk the walk.

What I love most about all the above rooms is that the 4th photo creates the illusion of a pig's face sticking out his tongue. What a happy-maker.

Holy moly. I'm having some serious apartment envy over here. Talk about a perfectly designed space. Best part? It still looks as though it's homey enough to elicit that sigh of relief when you walk through the door at the end of the day. That's what's missing for me in umpteen mid century or ultra modern houses we see on here.

In other news, here's a shameless plug for my new blog:

I don't know about you guys, but I see a hell of a lot more painted and "refreshed" furniture at the dump than I do wooden furniture. Maybe it's because once we've painted something like this, we feel like we've given it the very last leg of its life, and once we're through with it, there's no harm done in disposing of it. Maybe it's because I live in the prairies and we tend to cling to (and charge an arm-and-a-bloody-leg for) old furniture. I'm not sure. What I do know is that the beds were in solid enough condition for her to buy them and trust them to do the job for her kid. I wouldn't question their condition. But since they are HERS, she can do whatever she bloody likes with them, and as fellow members and followers of this blog, we can voice any opinion we please, thank you very much. She seems like a terribly sweet lady and I commend her for saving the beds and making them over for her daughter. They're still darling pieces of furniture. But as someone who's been looking for an "old" bed for years and can't find one at anything close to 25 dollars, I'm bummed. Can you imagine one of those beds sanded a bit, stained a dark mahogany, and that headboard upholstered with mens suiting fabric? I die. I die!

I find it hilarious that a chair made of such widely and easily produced materials could cost so much. (I'm sure saying that will earn me an onslaught of "but the quality!" sorts of counter-comments.) Don't even get me started on the design snobs who tout green principles while surrounding their farmhouse table with 400 dollar mass produced plastic "designer" chairs.

What I find to be "inauthentic" is a house filled with the same mid century modern pieces seen in every other house tour. I also find it comical that you have paid such ridiculous sums of money for mass-produced furniture and subsequently presume to be authentic. For a hand crafted piece made by a skilled and talented craftsman? Absolutely. For a mass-produced, molded plastic chair? Ridiculous.

Vive la résistance!

I love that you have a camel saddle. I was an oil brat growing up. Lived in the U.A.E and Egypt for a long time. So that saddle makes me very, very happy. Thank you for that :)
