I'm also a renter and had the same problem. I needed something removable, easy and effective. So rather spend a bunch of money to nicely cover a window that no one sees, I just covered all his windows in black construction paper. I just bought the squares of the stuff and taped it directly to the glass. In the spots where a lot of light came in, I did multiple layers.
