I live in a garden apartment and always get a steady stream of the little bastards. Our building uses a holistic/all-natural exterminator who squirts some sort of garlic gel that never seems to do anything to repel them. One night in the midst of a massive onslaught, I pessimistically tried a generous dusting cinnamon along all the window sills per a tip on ReNest. TOTALLY works! Every month or so I refresh. I haven't seen a single one since.

Since Apartment Therapy highlighted it last year, Haus Proud has been my absolute go-to favorite for gorgeous vintage housewares. Super reasonably priced and lovely to deal with. I get a ton of compliments about all the great stuff I've snapped up from her.

Not about fridges per se ( tho I have a 24" stainless steel Summit. It's nothing fancy but fine for the price. Think I paid $600). Mainly, I'm posting to warn anyone away from buying anything from AJ Madison, which I couldn't help notice is mentioned as the source for most of these refrigerators. When I did my kitchen reno two years ago, I ordered all my appliances from them... oven, fridge, dishwasher, vent. They were a total nightmare and screwed up every. single. order. BADLY. Won't go into the gory details but if you check out their Nextag reviews, you'll see what I'm talking about. The three stars they have are 5 star plants from company employees to balance the equal number of 1's. Big red flag.

Ask about the building's history of bedbugs FOR SURE! Then do a check on bedbugger.com to see if either that building or its next door neighbors ever had a report of bedbugs.

I smoke ( cough.cough) but I HATE the smell. I did a ton of research and got a Whispure 510 on ebay for, like $150. It truly is a wonder. Every person who visits notes how exceptionally fresh my apartment smells, a little like cut grass, despite my two cats. And when they find out I smoke inside, they're stunned. Downside: you have to change the pre-filter about once a year ($20) and the more expensive HEPA filter eventually ( $70, but I've had it for a year and half and it's still registering "new") It takes care of 500 square feet.

To each his own, of course, but the distance from my personal aesthetic to this pink lacy canopy can only be measured using the theoretical calculations of astrophysics. Not even in the 11th dimension could I sleep ensconced in it's frilly folds. Niet.
